The US Thanksgiving threshold doesn’t mean what it once did in terms of playoff certainty.

At the same time, the Eastern Conference playoff picture is very muddy at this early point in the season.

The B’s have looked mediocre at times, and flat out bad at other times.

Yet their heads are currently above water.

Good luck picking 8 playoff teams out of this assortment of clubs.

The standings at this point are really crowded. So many teams bunched up.
The Bruins for all their woes are only 6 point back from being tied for second overall league wide. However, they are also only 6 points up from being tied for last overall.
Not much separation.
Only a few teams playing well, and Winnipeg playing exceptional ... fastest team to 15 wins.

God the Atlantic is so mid. The Panthers are the class of it, the Leafs are the Leafs and everyone else is just mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

If i had to put money down on it right now, i'd say we get a 5/3 situation in favor of the Metro in terms of playoff spot. Jersey, Carolina and the Rangers are all better than pretty much anyone in the Atlantic not named Florida. Washington looks pretty good with something resembling forward depth and i wouldn't at all be surprised for the Islanders to do that thing where they lose 40 games in OT, sneak into the playoffs and become a massive pain in the ass for one of the top seeds.

You'd think somebody out of that trash pile between Buffalo, Ottawa and Detroit would finally decide to not suck ass for once, but no dice apparently.

Not just exceptional, best start in league history at 15-1-0.

Still won't buy them until i see Hellebuyck actual perform in the playoffs, but people here are understandably amped between the Jets and our CFL team going to a 5th consecutive championship.

There are 5 locks in the east - Panthers, Leafs, Canes, Devils and Rangers. Good for the Bruins that 3 of them are Metro. Some people may wish to dispute the Leafs but whatever their flaws their offensive firepower will get them in.

That leaves 3 spots with at least 6, maybe 7 teams in play. Double-edged sword in that the fact that all these teams are flawed and varying shades of inconsistent will make it comparatively easy to stay in the hunt for a spot, but in the end 3-4 teams with at least some sort of playoff ambitions are going to miss out.

West is a little different as you can already get the number of contending teams there down to around 10. The east is likely going to take longer to sort itself out. I think what the broader picture means is the Bruins can afford to have some patience and be a slow burn, but they shouldn't allow themselves to fall into the trap of thinking that things are more or less ok and they're a serious contender just because they're staying in the mix. Their benchmark still needs to be the likes of Florida and New Jersey even if they don't need to reach that level just to qualify.
