Stan Bowman Worst GM of the Year?

Somewhere around the Kings fourth powerplay goal last night it really became wild to see just how badly Bowman fumbled the Oilers depth situation after it felt like it finally all came together last year. The moves all looked kinda bad at the time and now with the benefit of seeing it play out look even worse.

Might be one of the worst pieces of GM’ing in some time for a team in its contention window.

If I didn't know better, I'd think he has a personal vendetta against McDavid/Draisaitl. Dude did absolutely everything he could to turn a cup contender into a potential first round sweep in not even 1 year. That's quite the achievement.

The only thing Bowman did was decline to match offer sheets that were, in fairness deliberately priced to maximize the chances of going unmatched.

Injuries are hurting the Oilers more than anything he did or did not do. Frankly, I'd argue keeping the powder dry in a year where the team is skidding is better long term planning than spending assets on trying to prop up a weak ship.

Along with their self induced putrid goalie situation, during McDavid's tenure theyve also drafted poorly, let their 2019+2020 1st round picks walk away to St Louis via offer sheets, and panicked/overpaid for suspect defensemen(signings and trades). They were gifted 2 of the top 5 players in the league and still f**ked it up somehow. Its sad really. I'd be pissed if i were a fan.

All I can imagine is if Chevy had McDavid and Drai what kind of team would he have built around them? Even without the gift of finding Helly in the 5th round, I bet a few cup wins for a Chevy built team
Funny we almost hired Zito back when PC was fired. Then all of of a sudden grandpa Kenny became available and we hired him instead. Zito would have gotten this team 2 cups by now if he was in charge. Too bad.

Think you mean Jeff Jackson but yes, everything they did pretty much blew up in their faces. They were better off just finding a way to keep Holloway, Broberg, McLeod, and Foegele and staying away from Arvidsson and Skinner while letting Janmark, Henrique, Brown etc walk, and finding a way to offload someone like Kulak in addition to the Ceci trade to get some more cap back as well. A disastrous off-season that also cost them a bright future... all four of those guys who left just had career years and still are just entering their primes (minus Foegele who is in his peak probably).

Jeff Jackson is really the person to blame (and is even the guy to hire Bowman)

I remember Oiler fans celebrating the moves Jackson did so much when they first happened... Man did it turn ugly quick. Hows Savoie helping out their cup aspirations this season?

People tend to either deify or crucify GMs here (sometimes both). I think a lot depends on luck and team specifics. Holland for example did a much better job in Edmonton than in his last years in Detroit. Hyman and Ekholm acquisitions were simply fantastic. Zito maybe could have avoided some of Holland's mistakes, but I do not think a Cup is ever a guarantee.

The goaltending situation alone is one of the biggest oversights by any GM this season.

It was clear that any quality starter would have won the Cup with Edmonton last year. And they go back to war with the same guy? Last year was pedestrian at best with 2.45 GAA and a .901 sv%. Not good enough. And wasting another year of McDrai by letting that guy go again as the starter in the playoffs is heinous.

We made the mistake of assuming he wasn't a complete idiot, that there was a plan for Holloway/Broberg, and he wasn't planning to hire Bowman :dunno:

They appeared good on the outside till you really looked and saw alll the NMC, lack of cap for the youth, the burying of other youth in the AHL and grabbing 3 guys who regressed hard.

I get not keeping Broberg because of the cap but letting Holloway walk for what, a third round pick? Unacceptable and really dumb. They let their ego get in the way and sent a good player away for nothing.

I was confused when it happened and I’m even more confused now as to why they went after guys like Jeff Skinner and Arvidsson. What did they think soft, middle 6 guys over 30 were going to bring? It certainly isn’t anything they need to win a cup.

But most of all, I can’t believe there’s still people on here and obviously in Edmonton’s front office defending the goaltending. Stuart Skinner has comparable career playoff stats to Dan Cloutier. You can’t win when your goalie can’t even put up a .900 save percentage. Stop making excuses for that, it’s unacceptable.

It seemed obvious to everyone except the Oiler's front office that the goaltending was and continues to be a problem, I am still surprised they did nothing to fix it.

It was just extremely short sighted.

You saw Henrique perform decent for a short sample size and decided to toss away your solid, young 3C with speed for a spec that isnt even helping them.

Broberg and Holloway, its like they though ahh we didnt really need them to get to this point, so we can let them go. Just like completely ignoring how they might continue to develop and help them in the future...

Same thing with Skinner, oh he got us to the finals, surely we can get there again with him...

Blues really took advantage of him with those offer sheets.

I couldn't tell you how dire their cap situation is, but that team needs to address it's goaltending in the summer. Can't keep ignoring what is clearly a giant gaping hole in your lineup.

That goalie situation baffles me and I still don't understand how they decided to go with Skinner like this.
Was there any talk about it or, did the management just hope that he would get his game together for these playoffs as well?
