This is lawyer drivel. The highlighted is a conflation of the facts and a projection of JBB's feelings, not Stamkos's. JBB wants to see what is out there, not Stamkos. If you wanted to sign Stamkos you would have offered him a real deal now that short term cap space is available. Stamkos doesn't want to test the market for fun, you're forcing him out. Asshole
But emotions aside that’s a legit move by JBB. We don’t know what number Stamkos’ camp is looking for. It might very well be too much with the holes we still have in the roster and what potential moves JBB has planned. There is no obligation to try and re-sign a pending UFA, even if it’s your franchise player, holder of several team records and current captain.

Fact is that Stamkos has maybe 1-3 good(-ish) years left. We saw signs of decline this season already. His last two (stellar) months of the season including playoffs aside he was nowhere near his level of play from the season before. Half the board here was fine with moving on from him at that point (“PP specialist, 5v5 blackhole, passenger, turnover machine, doesn’t win board battles” etc). Management saw all that too.

Which is what?
This is beyond frustrating. This guy is the face of your franchise and can still play. Pay the guy if the rumor of what he is looking for is true, which no reason to not think it is. He's a proven commodity, fan favorite, and great city ambassador.

Can't understand why BriseBois seems so hell bent against him as to how he wouldn't negotiate with him last season and now this. He's made cap space and doesn't want to to use a smaller fraction of it to keep your captain?

Unofficially they were asking for 4-5m per year.

Fans here were fine with moving on from him if it meant 8m per, as he isn't worth that any more and shouldn't be paid like a #1 center. This is very different, he's still a scoring line forward and should continue to be for at least the foreseeable future.

Look, I’m not advocating to let Stamkos leave. Like most here I want to see him retire as a Bolt. I’m trying to find arguments and reasons for what our GM supposedly suggested a couple hours ago.

He scored almost half his goals (19 of 40) in the last two and a half months (32 of 79 GP) of the regular season. That’s 0.59 GPG vs 0.44 GPG. Maybe JBB felt the latter is a realistic ballpark for Stamkos going forward. Or worse. And suddenly other players might look more interesting than Stamkos because they’d perform at a comparable rate, are better 5v5, are younger …

Long time lurker, first time (in about 3 years or so) poster.

Looks like Stamkos will hit free agency. Obviously I hope JBB can make him a lifer even if he does, but maybe he is ready to go elsewhere. I honestly could see Montreal as a destination and have MSL and be of course Vinny in Montréal too just made sense. He is at a point in his career where even with Montreal pressure he would not be the focal point for points and would be more of a leader role.

And so be it. Increasing the cap space, while possibly providing for Stamkos' extension didn't guarantee it. Losing Stamkos but adding Guentzel, additional top 6 F, middle 6 F, and solid RD is still possible, just there is no Stamkos in this future lineup. If JBB has his sights on players he feels are more valuable and/or important, he isn't going to, in his view, offer Stamkos some increased number to satisfy him. There were always other ways to improve the roster without Stamkos provided a trade of someone like Serg and Jeannot was completed.

I'm convinced this had to do with the new system Tampa tried to go with this year. Everyone not named Kucherov struggled. That can't be a coincidence.

Seems like maybe the others started to get comfortable with the new system or they made some changes back to what the guys they had were more comfortable with.

$5 million for two years, no more. He's going to become a liability, especially if injured. I love the guy, but we can't bankrupt the franchise into the future.

Nah man, it makes zero sense. Captain, HHOFer, 40 goal scorer, PPG, best player in the playoffs - at 4-5m per year. No other free agent of same caliber would say yes to that, plus all the excuses about the tight cap situation are now out of the window as well.

Still hopeful that this is just a pissing contest to see if Stammer budges. Media also does media things for clicks.

They already know he's a great leader though and that he sets the right tone with work ethic, etc. They know nothing about some new guy they bring in.

Stamkos is the main leader helping guys brought onto the team to play the way Tampa expects - some guys adjust, others not so much. But this guy's work ethic, leadership, love for the team are those intangibles you don't just gamble away, unless he was asking for the moon.

Which sounds like he is not.

I can't imagine Hedman and others would be happy with letting this guy walk. What about McDonagh, who they just brought back, and his first call was to Stamkos.

This kind of feels like how we lost Palat, with Palat saying he would have stayed for any real offer. If we are letting Stamkos walk instead of giving him 5m... lol why would free agents even want to come here after that? Just... what!?

Where else can we get that value?
And that was with an important complimentary piece of your roster. This guy is the face of your franchise.

No other player in Tampa is as big as he is with the exception of Mike Evans.

It doesn't make any sense after BriseBois made the moves he did today.

He's becoming an used car salesman where you can't trust anything he says, especially with the bringing Stamkos back was top priority message as soon as the season concluded.

He had a good 5 games after being a ghost in many,.many runs. He was quite bad 5v5 and terrible defensively. He pit up.a lot of points and goals because of ghe power play, but he's not irreplaceable. I'd rather keep him, but there ate ways for JBB to use the current cap space, and potentially more, to improve the team without Stamkos getting g a 6-8 year deal and/or at a price JBB doesn't want to pay. There has been zero reliable evidence that Stamkos was willing to take 4-5, just a source saying that's what his agent said. They can say whatever they want to try and pressure JBB/try and gain extra leverage in the negotiation, but it's far from necessarily the truth. JBB will continue with his approach, and as most of the non witch burning townsfolk on here have continued to posit, waiting to see.how it plays out before condemn g anyone's decisions regarding the roster remains a good plan.

As I said in the other post, what he may or may not be asking for is just noise at thos point. He has great leadership and presence in the room, but again, JBB has his plans moving ahead. While making it work with Stamkos would be my 1st preference, if he does indeed leave, while a sad day it will be, it does not mean the team cannot be improved or kept a contender moving ahead. As long g as JBB makes the right moves in bringing in quality roster pieces with the newly available cap space, this is possible with or without Stamkos. Until these decisions are finalized and we know how the team looks, I won't be rushing to any judgements on his work this offseason.
