Throughout the years there's been countless jobbers here on HfBoards complaining about how awful Stamkos has been in the playoffs. Some of those have been Tampa Bay fans themselves. Stamkos has been seen as inferior to Martin St Louis, the Michael Jordan of Hockey, Kucherov, Hedman, Vasiljevski, Sergachev, Brayden Point and even Ondrej Palat, at least when it comes to the playoffs. Well now Stamkos has finally made it into the all time top 100 in playoff points with 50+51=101 points so far. So it's time to give Stamkos his due and admit that Stamkos is actually pretty good in the playoffs too.

On top of that Stamkos is also a fantastic captain that will go down as one of the greatest leaders of all time, with 2 Stanley cup wins. And not just any Stanley cup wins. It was during a time when most were hiding in their homes afraid of dying that Stamkos was busy leading his team to those cup wins. Brandon Hagel just said the following about Stamkos: “There’s a reason he’s going to go down as one of the best captains in the entire NHL, The guy brings it every single night, pushes his team to the max, and he’s been showing it with his performance on the ice, every single night, every single game so far this series.”
Can't say I'm all that surprised as Stamkos was one of the greatst leaders of all time in his previous life:

And on top of that Stamkos is also making hockey history as he joined the late greats Gordie Howe and Teemu Selanne as the only player to score a goal in the playoffs 4 games in a row after turning 34. Seems like Stamkos might just age like fine wine himself. And he could actually have a lot left in the tank still as Howe and Selanne scored 27 and 26 goals in the playoffs after turning 34. We could actually see Stamkos go down as the best playoff goal scorer of the modern era in that scenario.

Kind of weird to tout his leadership by him talking about leading the team to 2 cup wins. He only played like a minute in the first run, and he wasn't particularly great in the second one. Ironically, his best run was the one they lost to Colorado, though he still ended up with similar numbers to the second winning run.

Can't we all agree Stamkos is a great player and also stop saying he's a 2x Stanley Cup winner? He played 2 minutes and 47 seconds in that 2020 Cup run. Yes technically his name is on it twice but it's disingenuous. It doesn't detract from his HoF career, it's just a difference of being honest vs factual.

I mean he did score a goal in the finals in those few minutes. A whole lot of names on the cup did way less than that. Like it or not, calling him a two time winner is honest and factual.

Except he is one? That's factual not whatever is in your head canon.

You know what I mean though, he played < 3 minutes in one game of a playoff run. His name is and should be on the Cup. I just mean in discussions it's obviously weird or disingenuous to refer to him as a 2x Cup winner

Had he not scored I would see your point, but he scored a goal in a game that Tampa won. He directly contributed to the teams win in the finals. Like I said, a lot of cup winners have done way less and nobody is nitpicking them.

Let's remember one thing, Stamkos was still a big part of the 2020 team. He had 66 points in 57 games for them that year. Maybe only the one playoff game where he scored a goal, but to me he still wins that Cup. He's part of the team, in the dressing room, played in the regular season and did well. He helped get them in the position to go far in the playoffs. He played a bigger role in 2021 of course. And in 2022 he played well also. So yeah, he is alright in the playoffs. Not great, maybe not even considered "good" by his standards, but alright. He's won, and he's been there. It isn't as if he is Joe Thornton and NEVER got there.

Now, there are a couple of things that bug me about him in the playoffs. He was never "the guy" on a deep run. 2011 was St. Louis and Lecavalier doing the heavy lifting. Stamkos had 13 points in 18 games and you can say he's only 20-21 but he was a 2nd team all-star that year. Teddy Purcell and Steve Downie outpointed him, and Stamkos had been a 51 goal man by this time. You expected more. 2015 they make the Cup final, you expect it to be "his" team at this time. But Kucherov, Johnson and Killorn all outpoint him. He never took the reigns. 2016 he plays just one game - Game 7 - in a loss to the Pens. 2018 he's okay, but both Point and Kucherov outpoint him. This was a 7 game series vs. Washington and they had two chances to eliminate the Caps. Both Game 6 and 7 were shutouts. Might have been a good time for Stamkos to step up. 2021 and 2022 he contributes in a win. As per what you expect he wasn't "the" guy, but by now he isn't even in the regular season.

It is hard to evaluate his playoff career. He'll be remembered as a winning captain, and I personally believe from that alone he brought more to the table than the scoresheet shows, but he's just an okay playoff performer. You point to a lot of better Lightning playoff performers.

Not even close. He doesnt deserve this honour. 5 goals after 14 SOG it just kiss of fortune. Even now highly criticized Kucherov has the same 6 points against Florida without single goal.
HM: Kucherov did everything for TBL making post season, while Stamkos was so so for most of regular season

Now strap on your helmet and realize that Brad Marchand is #43, with 136 pts. Think Brad is one year older (and hopefully about to go to the second round).

That is weird to me, when you think about how good Stamkos is.

He's the Franklin Roosevelt of 1st overall picks, when he easily could have been the Benjamin Franklin of centre icemen.
Huge disappointment if you care about analogies being well-conveyed.

Given how much credit he gets for the 2020 playoffs, he’s more like the John F Kennedy of William Henry Harrisons.

Will he continue to do it as a member of Tampa. Weird that they never got to a contract announcement this season.
