SSM Greyhounds 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

Of all our silly flyer picks over the years, I'd say picking Daley Jr. made the most sense. I still have reservations about using high picks for players committed elsewhere, but we will see how this one pans out over the next few years.
Rutger McGroarty 4th round pick lol, Cole Caufield and John Beecher also most recent come to mind that would fit that criteria of silly flyers..?

was going to say haha. i heard from this guy that heard from that guy....

that's like hearing it from the pizza guy for those that remember

Dude I was the pizza guy.. Ruicci was directly talking about me. I broke the Raddysh deal and I worked at Pinos in the deli at the time( was young), he confused me with my buddy who was the pizza manager. Pizza delivery guy, whatever it was, the shots were thrown at me for the Taylor Raddysh stuff.

I’m actually pretty sure he threw in grocery store clerk or bag boy or something too.

Now you know the truth

People like to bitch about flier picks in the moment and claim victory when when a season single guy doesn't report. Sure you lose a 4th round pick or a 12th round pick here and there, but consider the rewards over the years. All of these guys dropped due to American college or NTDP commitments.

Chase Reid, Jordan Charron, Matthew Virgilio, Jack Kopacka, Ryan Roth, Gabe Guertler, Keeghan Howdeshell, and probably more. Maybe Croskery and Daley in the near future. Both of those guys are easy first round talents, perhaps top 10 even.

Even a relatively unsuccessful recruitment in Virgilio got us back more picks than we used on, Caufield, Beecher, and McGroarty combined.

I love to see the flier picks, even if it's just a 25% chance that they come. Getting elite talent to the Soo is essential to creating a championship calibre club.

Rutger was frustrating because it was in a season we already lacked a 2nd round pick.

Croskery would be another. If he reports, Raftis will get the praise! But until he does, that pick is part of the disaster that was the 2024 draft. Even Cali was a flyer if Raftis knew he might not report and we may never know what happened there.

Virgilio was a flyer as well wasn't he? That one worked out for us though.

Cole Caulfield was pretty free of risk as other's have mentioned.

There's a HUGE difference in taking mid to late round "flyer picks" vs. using high picks although I doubt some will allow for that kind of nuance.

For example, Jack Kopacka, as cited by Fischy was an 8th round pick. Howdeshell was a 10th. Gabe Guertler was a 6th in a season where we had duplicates in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th round (not to mention it was Dubas that drafted him). Ryan Roth is a free agent signing. Just pulling names out of our ass now eh?

The point being, it's not the same to compare a late flyer like Caulfield to blowing top 3 picks to get nothing, especially in a season where you're already missing picks.

Once Fisch takes a stance on something - in this case that he felt Miller should be our starter this year - he will die on that hill. I think most fans have valid concerns about moving forward with Miller as our starter.

I can appreciate the organizations unwillingness to give up on him considering the astronomical cost to draft him, but in my opinion he has not shown the consistency needed to be an OHL caliber starter.

do you think he would admit that carter george would have been a better pick, or is he that dug into his stance lol?

Holub has a far better chance of returning with this new import rule. I think there's a slim chance we could even see Nordh back.
