SSM Greyhounds 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Just wanted to address the earlier debate about tanking for a better pick vs. making the playoffs and getting swept.

Although that's the way it was framed, I never looked at it that way.

The Hounds have basically been in playoffs for 2 months already. Every game was meaningful, and the development and growth in this team down the stretch has been fun to watch. Sure, they had their struggles at times, but they also played their best hockey of the season. We are hoping for some impressive hockey over the next two seasons, and I believe this stretch run has laid the groundwork for that.

Had they been in tank mode down the stretch, not close enough to a playoff spot to play meaningful games, I think that slows their growth and impacts the way the team starts next year.

For the record, I still would have liked to see Raftis move one more piece at the deadline. But maybe I am now glad that it wasn't Mignosa or Cloutier (provided they are back as OAs).

In the end, we finished 7th last. If we tanked, maybe we end up 3rd last? Not worth tanking, in my books.

And who knows, maybe we win a couple and force a 3rd playoff home game vs. Windsor. And then anything can happen.

2 first rounders is nice although Ryder Cali would have been a nice piece for our next run. Let's hope Raftis knocks it out of the park this year because last year was an abomination the org can't afford to repeat.

last year's draft wasn't great, however there is still a chance that 2nd pick callum croskery
reports to the soo next season, also carson andrew the 4th round pick will be a solid ohl
player moving forward. With the 19th compensatory pick in this years draft should also
help the soo moving forward.

gr;eyhounds seemed nervous according to Dean, but so did Dean.
If there is not more of a defensive effort to be aware when Greentree and Protas
are on the ice it will be a short series. I know spits have last change however
Gillen and McConnel Barker as a defensive pair should never be on the ice when
Greentree and Protas are. They are the 2 that will kill the hounds in this series.
I noticed there was special attention placed on Brady Martin from the spits.
Dean got out coached last night for sure.

I suspect we see Croskery.

I do hope with that 19th pick the Soo selects someone with the intention of trading them at the deadline for a stud. I still want Tyler Hopkins in the Soo but I am aware we need a big time dman next year too. Defensive monster preferably.

always in big games. Always.

Not expecting to win but I want to say last nights game is proof this team is never prepared and they only have one gear, one breakout, one dimension.
Hahaha figured we'd see you after that loss. Pretty quiet during the winning streak.

Nobody had complaints about him getting the kids going last year when we had a veteran laden team.

This team is exactly where 95% of the fan base expected them to be. They're heavy 07, one of the youngest in the league. They'll get some experience this year and be ready next year.

Quiet? My account was deleted and locked out. I don’t know if you missed the blurb on the homepage but accounts were deleted.

What does that winning streak even mean? If a few wins streaked together is what keeps John Deans job then our fan base has bigger problems

I think it’s much larger than 5% of the fan base that wants Dean replaced. Absolutely happy for the kids pulling it together, I said it before that natural talent wins games at time. We have a very talented roster but it’s poorly coached and not utilized properly. It showed last night after the 30th stretch pass by Reid and 50th cross crease attempt. If Gillens is paired with BMB tomorrow I might not even watch cause Greg Walters is gonna eat that up again

I think this team actually is better then what the standings showed and I believe many others have echoed this same sentiment on social media.

You let me know what big game Dean has won in the Soo and not get out coached in and I’ll shut my mouth about him being out coached in every big game because he’s one dimensional (there isn’t. Longest tenured coach in Soo Greyhounds history and has never made it past the 2nd round)

Anyway no sense going back and forth about it( we have many times in dm even haha ) We will find out pretty soon in regards to coaching changes.

Let’s discuss how this isn’t a 5 minute major to a repeat offender? So blatant it’s not even funny

We're right where I thought we'd be. I'd like us to put up more of a fight but I think this series is done in 4 or 5.

Joe, you wanted Bannister turfed as well, so Im curious who this mythical stud coach is that's not already coaching? I'm open to the debate about a coaching change but only if it's an obvious improvement.

Regarding that hit, that's a blatant headshot that should be suspendable.
Spellacy better keep his head up because somebody is gonna catch him in the tracks 😉

Are you saying I was wrong about Bannister? As I recall I wasn’t the only one calling for him to be removed. He and Dean are two peas in one pod. Subpar coaches. I’m tired of this “ hiring and drafting Soo greyhounds style”. Time to change up the entire idea of what Soo Greyhounds hockey is. Big and tough not small and .. dump and chase and rim puck around the boards.

I can’t give you a better coaching option and that’s why you asked, but what I can say is that John Dean has the longest tenure in Soo Greyhounds history and his biggest accomplishment is a positive season record and a 2nd round exit.. it’s NOT good enough. He has been given more chances than any other coach in history.

Who’s gonna catch him in his tracks? Chris Brown? lol I bet you no one touches Spellacy lol

Since your memory is so good do you remember who I advocated for over John Dean? He’s a winner everywhere he goes. Can’t believe they let him go elsewhere. Do you remember? I do. I’ll give you a hint: he’s local.

To stay on topic of the playoffs: really hope we get a win in tomorrow so the fans have some energy going into game 3

For sure that was a dirty play. Literally

Fair point about the makeup of the team. I won't say you can't win with smaller quick players, but it's much harder. Easy in the regular season when you're only playing the same team once a month or two. Much harder when you play the same team up to 7 times in 2 weeks.

Not splitting hairs, but that's raftis responsible for that haha.

At this point Martin is the only guy that can dish out some punishment. Maybe charron. But we can't afford them being in the box. So he will probably go scott free. I really wish we would go with size and skill tho.

are you referring to the guy who went on to coach in the NHL lol? but he isn't good enough for the greyhounds? Reading through your posts, I can't believe you expect dean to get more out of this group. just to break it down:

We have some of the worst goaltending in the league- an OA who was dumped by his team at the deadline for our OA who was average at best In this league and a backup with the worst numbers in the league.

on D we have 1 OA who is again an average OA in the league at best, one late 07 who looks to have potential to be great but has played 30 games in the league and 5 other D who make virtually no impact and could be replaced with any other OHL d men. its a bad group.

up front our top line features 2 17 year olds and a 19 year old undrafted player. how is that supposed to go up against teams with NHL draft picks who are 18-19 years old? our second line is solid for the league however both NHL pick forwards have been in and out of the lineup all year. our bottom 6 are all 17 or younger and most of which are rookies.

You are being delusional in your vision of this roster being better than it is. We made the playoffs and we don't have to get plastered by london for 4 games. most of the group gets their first taste of post season play and can build for next year and more importantly the year after that when this team should really be able to contend.

Very late hit, could have been avoided, unsuspecting player.

It checks all of the boxes for a suspension in the regular season, but they may give more leniency in the playoffs.

Houndzfan20 is right hahaha. You really only show up when the team is losing with the fire Dean brigade, “accounts deleted” or not. Idk if he’s the guy either, but I’m way more afraid of what’s out there to replace him. Also, if you hated Bannister than I’m not really sure what it takes to make you happy.. considering all he did was win. Which is what your primary argument against Dean is.

Surprise surprise Hounds didn't come out ready for the 1st period or 2nd period. Penalty Kill continues to be over aggressive and give up a ton of goals. Wonder what Deanear's excuse will be tonight? Last game was nervous, maybe too hot in the building, bad ice?

Windsor being a high powered offensive team? I get it. Everyone has a right to be unhappy. But Windsor is bigger, faster and stronger. This shouldn’t be that big of a surprise. You could have the best executed and well coached team, but this team has about 11 players under 17 and under. Sorry everyone. Just really sick of negativity..
