Are they able to buyout some of the waste of space AHL contracts?
Sure but I don't think I've ever seen teams buy out the Martins or Karabaceks of the world. Sure, it opens up a contract spot, but it costs the team more in both money and in cap space. Teams are really only going to get rid of guys like that either as spare parts in minor trades (usually to even out the number of contracts going between teams) or if they decide to go play overseas and their contracts can be terminated.

How much money does that actually cost, though? Is it really so prohibitive that it's not worth it if you really are concerned about the contract limit?

They could slip someone in akin to what they did with Parker a few years ago, the forgotten part of the McNabb-Fasching deal.

No one has ever been concerned enough about the contract limit for that to be an issue. Pretty sure that the contract limit is one of those things, like the cap floor, that fans spend way more time worrying about than teams do.

I guess that’s kind of my point.. for all the talk of the importance of being careful on handing out contracts so as to avoid a bind, is it really that binding? Isn’t them not signing a player really more just an indication that they don’t like him as opposed to any contract limit concerns?

It's a flexibility issue if they are lining up other players to sign, especially if it's for the big club or first-recall guys to fill the Amerks top line.

That is, not signing Budik is more about finding and filling with players they like more on NHL deals while they await the chaff reaching their term and rolling off naturally.

Well I can buy that potentially they might be more willing to take a chance on him if they didn't already have a few "well we might as well sign him" guys sitting around contributing nothing.

Curious...

Is Ullmark still considered a prospect under our rules (if we were doing a poll today?)

Will Antipin still be considered a prospect (regardless of whether we sign, qualify, etc)

Casey Nelson? CJ Smith?

Updating my rankings, and cleaning up (removing Fasching, Budik, Hagel, Osmanski).... anyone else graduate? gone?

Depends on which guidelines are used. Under the old system (Hockey's Future - NHL Prospect Criteria) Nelson is no longer eligible as he's passed three years and will be 26 this summer. Antipin would be eligible using those rules until he turns 26 in December... so summer or fall perhaps. Smith is only 23, only 1 pro season so still eligible. I would think Ullmark is no longer since he signed at 22 and has the 3 full seasons per the criteria from the old site that we use in the polls so often.

One interesting case will be if Willman's rights extend when he transfers. If they do, he is still in the depth chart for another year. If not, then he's done August 15th. Peterson likely rolls off, though maybe they sign him to an AHL deal for Cincy/Rochester depth.

FYI, I'm treating Ullmark as aged out, he won't be on the next set of polls. Nelson will still be on in the fall (signed ELC 3/22/2016) as will Antipin if he's still in the organization.

I missed the Willman thing, I assume if he is eligible to play at BU then they'll keep his rights another year a la Connor Hurley (and I think Roo Adams had a medical redshirt at one point?).

All prospects who fit the HF prospect criteria are included.

ELIGIBILITY
-In his Age-24 season, or younger, with fewer than 65 NHL games played for a skater (or 45 games for a goalie).

-If signed out of Europe or the NCAA at age 22 or older, fewer than 65 (skaters) or 45 (goalies) NHL games within three years of signing.

RULES
Each poll runs 24 hours and is public. Vote for your choice and nominate a prospect from the list below to replace that player on the subsequent poll.

If there is a tie in the Top 10, there will be a run-off and the losing prospect will be returned to the pool for the next vote. Outside the Top 10, the tie will hold, the two highest Adds will be added and we'll move on.

PROSPECT RANKINGS
In the past, we've also done skater-only and goalie-only threads, as well as aggregate-type of rankings. If someone is interested, they are welcome to inherit that responsibility.
