Speculation: Ron MacLean done after this season as host of HNIC

He really jumped the shark for me this year. I don't need poetry and puns and mentioning band songs for the first 3 minutes of the broadcast. He worked so well, but now it's all yin- and no -yang.

With that said, I expect any replacement to be terrible.

He tried to jump me but I speared him with a dull knife

I think he has been done for a while

Good he’s nobodies best friend but he can pretend very well. Can’t watch him after the Don Cherry set up show. I’m surprised Don didn’t see it coming and bit so hard on the bait that night

Damn.

Not a lot of love in this thread.

To me, he & Don were absolute cornerstones of growing up in Canada. While I will admit that he's starting to get stale lately, I won't forget about all the great years that came before. Was never the same once Don was let go.

Wish him all the best in the future.

Nobody cares about MacLean and Cherry outside of Ontario

Obviously take this with a grain of salt but this guy has broken a lot of Canadian media stories over the years and it makes sense. How are feeling about this. Feels like it's time? 62 years old with 36 years there.
Article talks about 'how much stronger Jennifer Botterill' is on the American broadcasts... Its personalities like hers that shouldnt be on at all.

lol yeah, they all stay silent when the topic is Cherry directly, but when it's something like this, their true colors come out
Whats this supposed to mean exactly. People arent allowed to be Cherry fans?

I hated what he did to Cherry but to tell you the truth, even when Don was there in the last few years, Ron had dropped a lot. He had fully embraced "the message" and he seemed to avoid controversies whereas in the past he had been a pretty good newsman who could handle interesting topics. I liked the old Hot Stove format when he had guys from every place of the country providing news and gossip. Then he started to phase out all the controversial guys. So in the last few years it was pretty tame and heatless with guys talking in studio. Maybe he had a short leetch.

If that is what you stand by, then it certainly says something about you, IMO
You know, its funny. I thought I remembered a conversation I had with you...
So he’s a terrible leader because he disagrees with you on the appropriate punishments for certain individuals regarding Brad Aldrich’s actions? That makes no sense.
So standing behind an admittedly out of touch icon of Canada is bad taste, but you have no problem standing behind the captain of your team for the Kyle Beach incident and its handling?

Lets be clear, Cherry was out of it and it was probably right to put him out to the pasture, but lets not be hypocrites here and try to label the characters of people on the internet for one thing, okay?

I think it's time. With guys like Bieksa doing so well next to him Ron looks like a guy from a time gone by. Terribly dated and out of touch in a lot of his views. He's also an NHL kiss ass and never seems to be able to call it like it is.

Hrudey is another one who should be replaced. His attempt to appear younger with whatever he's done to eye brows makes me feel uncomfortable. He looks like Carrot top with out the red hair and freckles. Just straight up strange.

Either way, I've grown tired of these old guys who're from a different era. The time has come to get new faces in there.

Makes sense. Pretty much the only remaining vestige of "Hockey Night in Canada" as an institution. They've managed to erase every single other element of it, and replace it with homogenized Sportsnet drivel, irritating and pompous "personalities", and obnoxious advertising interspersed with the pushing of unwanted gambling encouragement.

It's absolutely pathetic, what a Canadian institution has become. Used to be a special broadcast that was worth watching. Now, it's just the unfortunate filler you have to put up with while waiting for the next period to start.

Toews is a dumb hockey jock. I don't care to say he's human of the year...

Don't worry about it, it's good old WarriorofTime, he is pretty much wrong about every single subject matters.

Cherry was an old grandpa from a bygone era. We can all make excuses.

Hope you didn't miss the point of my message. People can like Cherry in-spite of some of his conduct, just as you still (presumably) root for your Hawks and Toews despite questionable conduct. I certainly wouldn't project your character based off of those two things.

The worst part is people like him having to be passive aggressive about it. He won't ever call you what he thinks of you directly, but your opinions "certainly suggest something".

I'm a second generation Canadian and of half-Persian descent, and frankly I felt his comments were overblown and didn't have ill-intent. Not saying people have to agree with me on that, but being of immigrant background on both sides I think I can speak for how I feel on the issue.

Again, I can understand why Rogers let him go, but I can also understand the charm he had to many Canadians.

This is a bad comparison, if Toews was in front of me, I'd tell him his opinion on the Aldrich fallout was bad. I'm not sure the point you're making, but seems like an attempted "GOTCHA!" ?

Here you go - I think if you endorse Cherry's view, you are at least passively OK with lots of really bad things, racism, xenophobia, toxic masculinity, nativism, all sorts of stuff we should try to move passed... if not someone who outright endorses those things.
