Speculation MVP Consideration

Haven't seen a thread on this and it's possible the mods might want to merge this with player discussion. That said, is there a more valuable player in the league right now than Patrice Bergeron?
Plays in all key situations. Plays against the other teams top line, is producing like a top line player and is Leading a flawed Bruins team to a playoff birth.

I know Patty Kane is the most explosive offensive player in the league and is just as deserving. But here's to hoping that it's just not the Selke Patrice is considered for this year
 
Kane, Karlsson, and if he breaks the wins record, Holtby will finish top 3.
 
I can make an argument that he should win again

Kane sure. Holtby will win the vezina. To say Erik Karlsson is more valuable than PB37 is a massive stretch. Minus player on a non playoff team?

Like the player but there's no way he's even considered.

I think there's a solid case for Bergy but his problem is while he is having an amazing year and has carried the team through a lot, his actual numbers aren't sexy enough for a forward to get the MVP.

I agree and I do think Kane ultimately wins it because of his gaudy numbers. I just feel Bergeron should be considered.

It is the same as the Norris. Numbers = best.

We all know that is not true.
 
I also think when it comes to the MVP the numbers often end up telling the story because there just isn't any way to see the bulk of games and just what specific players mean to their team's success.

Price won the Vezina last year, didn't stop him from getting votes. Settings the single season wins record would skew votes in his favor.

Karlsson is on pace to go PPG as a defenseman and if were to go down that team would be very close to bottom 5. The gap between Karlsson and the second best defender on that team is huge. He most certainly means close the same to Ottawa as Bergeron does to Boston.

Bergeron isn't good enough offensively to be considered for the Hart by the voters (Not me by the way to get this distinction out there). He currently sits 14th in points and when you compare that to past winners, it just won't be good enough to get recognition. He'll win the Selke by a landslide though. It's possible Kane gets 40 more points than Bergeron this year, the current difference is 32.

07 - Ovi - 1st Goals, 1st Points
08 - Ovi - 1st Goals, 2nd Points
09 - Sedin - 25th Goals,1st Points
10 - Perry - 1st Goals, 3rd Points
11 - Malkin 2nd Goals, 1st Points
12 - Ovi - 1st Goals, 3rd Points
13 - Crosby - 7 Goals, 1st Points
14 - Price - Goalie
 
He won't win the Hart, and I'd be pleasantly surprised if he's a finalist. But I'd kind of like to see him win his fourth Selke instead. That puts him in rare company with Gainey, and at only 30 it's reasonable to think he could get one or two more.

But I would have no problem with him winning the Hart. :)

Oh, and actually he should already be at four Selkes. Stupid Toews winning with fewer first place votes. Argh.
 
Bergeron absolutely deserves it this year come on if he finishes with over 80 points that is just as good as 100+ from an offense only guy like Kane.

Bergeron is the most valuable Bruin.

I consider Ray Ferraro to be one of the most knowledgable analysts. And he said recently on a Canadian station that he knew Patrice Bergeron was a great player. But he didn't realize how great he was until he started watching the Bruins every game because of his son.
 
Bergeron should be a candidate but won't be. Absolutely will win the Selke again though, and frankly should be going for his 5th in a row. Toews winning that year was ridiculous.

It's actually an interesting point, so clearly proving your value by not playing. It's astonishing the way the Canadiens were soaring and then plummeted after the injury.

And this right here is why the numbers matter so much. I think it's easy to miss how good a player is when voters can't watch every game for every team. Even when you're in a job that has you watching a lot of hockey it's hard to appreciate how good a player is and how much they contribute to their team.

So everyone looks at the stats. One thing that's helped Bergeron's Selke case has been advanced stats. Without advanced stats I think Bergy's lower points totals would hold him back.

I think this season with a clearly fading Chara Bergy's dominance has become even more evident.
