Sons better than their hall-of-famer dads

Jake Sanderson in his rookie year is already better than his father ever was. Amazing, really.
I like Sandy but he’s not better than his father yet lol. His dad put up 700 points, and was a solid player. He probably gets there through.
Plus Geoff isn’t in HHOF

Obviously there are many sons who are better players than their dads, but when you move the discussion up to HHOFers, it becomes less likely. The chances of anybody being better than a hall-of-famer is relatively small.

Mark Howe and Brett Hull are about the best you could ask for, but it's almost impossible to match the dads.

Keith Tkachuk is still in play....he has a chance of still being inducted (and the success and popularity of his sons can only help his case). The three of them - Keith, Matthew, Brady - are potentially fairly close to each other as players.

The Earnhardts? No way is the guy with zero championships better than his father who is one of the GOATs.
Although Dale Sr’s father Ralph was considered a top short and dirt track racer in North Carolina but had to work in the mills to support his family. Ralph isn’t in NASCAR’s Hall of Fame but with NASCAR celebrating its 75th anniversary, Ralph was named one of its 75 greatest drivers.

Ah. Of course my mind went to Dale and Dale Jr. I stand corrected :)

The only thing Jr has over Sr, is Dale Jr won more most popular driver awards.

Archie and Eli is an argument. The Earnhardt's. Bobby and Barry Bonds. As far as hockey goes that's a tough argument. Matthew might be better than Keith which was is the closest I can think of other than the Hull's but Bobby was that f***ing guy.
Archie, Bobby and Keith are not HOFers

It's too hard, you gotta grow up at least somewhat hungry.

Otherwise you're pampered from young and most of the kids of ex good-great NHLers are only alright.

The ideal is like McDavid or Drai, having a pro dad that knows what it takes, but not pro to the point anyone GAF about what he did, so he'll push you to make it, he's got the connects, but nobody is going to be like "wow you are the son of ____" and blow smoke up your ass

Vlad Jr has a chance but the last 1.25 seasons seem to be trending towards him being worse than Vlad Sr.

Domantas Sabonis will have a better NBA career than Arvydas, but it's cheating as Aryvdas had bad knees by the time he came over.

If you want to talk racing Al Unser Sr and Al Unser Jr are likely both in an open wheel hall of fame and make more sense than the Earnhardt example. Again this scenario is one where the father seems slightly better than the son.

Oliver/Earl Seibert.

There may be a case to be made for Lynn Patrick being a better player than Lester Patrick; I don't agree with it, but it's not completely far-fetched.

Anyone mention in NASCAR that Richard Petty was better than his father Lee Petty? Both are in NASCAR HOF fame but Richard would clearly be the winner

Thanks for that one but man players born so far back are hard to evaluate.

Let's open this up a bit more. Is there any current or retired player not in the hall better than their dad in the hall?

I thought that was the question already…the answer is no. I see the Seibert example, but how can anyone really assess that? Brett vs Bobby would be a good example if Brett was better but he’s clearly not.

It's a bit more nuanced now. The question required both of them to be in the hall. Now, a current player on their way to a hall-of-fame career or a retired player not yet in the hall but who might get in is eligible as well. Though I honestly don't think it changes things much.

The best sons of players don't have a father in the hall for the most part. The closest is probably Matthew Tkatchuk but Keith isn't in the HHOF, although you may argue he deserves to be in.

I didn't think the original question specified that the son had to be a HOFer, but doesn't really matter....doesn't change anything.

There are two problems with Tkachuk: 1) Keith isn't a HOFer, some can argue he should get there, but I don't see much of a chance....but I guess it depends if there is a very weak year. He does have 500g and 1,000pts, but well under a ppg. He lead the league in goals 1 time, but only by 1 goal and 4 players were within 2 goals. Other than that year, he finished top 10 in goal scoring 3 other times (6,7,8), but well off the lead. For points, he was never really close....his best year was 12th and the closest he ever got to the top was 19pts back, but that was in a short season, for full season, closest he got was 21pts. Over the course of his career, he's finished ON PER YEAR AVERAGE, 69th in goals (26 off lead) and 94th in pts (57 off lead). To me, that's just not good enough for HOF, especially for a guy with no hardware.

2) Matthew's career is really too young to try and compare at this point, though trending to be better.

Randy Orton was better than his father Bob Orton.

Both hall of famers.

Yes I know it's not hockey. It's wrestling. But I couldn't think of any in hockey.
Dwayne Johnson has definitely achieved a lot more in the wrestling world than his HOF father, too.

3 Generations in the WWF/WWE Hall of fame there, The rock, his father, and his grandfather (from his mother's side)
To add, just about everyone in Roman Reigns' extended family is in the Hall of Fame and none of them are Roman Reigns, not in kayfabe or for real tbh.
