Time to bring Red Hot Chili Peppers into the mix.

-Tearjerker from One Hot Minute is about Kurt Cobain.
-Transcending from the same album about River Phoenix.
-Knock Me Down/My Lovely Man about their original guitarist Hillel Slovak.
-Eddie from their recent Return Of The Dream Canteen is about Eddie Van Halen

This is not including Venice Queen (By The Way)/Brendan's Death Song (I'm With You) about important people in the LA music scene who aren't recognized nationally. Dreams Of A Samurai from The Getaway while never officially confirmed, the lyrics to me heavily suggest it's about Scott Weiland.

This alone puts that silly notion that "all they do is sing about California" to bed.

Some others:

-Hollie Cook has a song called Ari Up which is a tribute to the lead singer of The Slits (who Hollie played with in a reformed version decades later)

-Donna The Buffalo have a song called Dr. King about MLK Jr.

-Temple Of The Dog's Say Hello 2 Heaven about Andy Wood

Piccasso was alive when the song came out

Nightshift - The Commodores (Marvin Gaye & Jackie Wilson)
Missing You - Diana Ross (Marvin Gaye)
I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy & Faith Evans (Notorious B.I.G.)
Crossroads - Bone Thugs & Harmony (Eazy-E)
They Reminisce Over You - Pete Rock & CL Smooth (Trouble T-Roy)
I'll Be missing you, in my books is just and out and out cover song---there is sampling and then there is what they did

My google searches showed he died April of 73 and the Modern Lovers album it was off of was released in 76.
Didn't delve any further to see it was recorded in 72. :o

I disagree, the music was used & they utilized the chorus, but verses/lyrics are new & follow a different cadence as well as the interpolation of "I'll Fly Away"...a cover would have utilized most of the original lyrics...

The deceased wasn't a celebrity, but his death was notable and his musical tribute among the saddest ever written:

Arlo Guthrie performing "Deportee (Plane Crash At Los Gatos)", a song written by his father about a plane crash that killed a group of migrant farm workers who were being deported ("The radio says they were just deportees").

Bad Taz - Eternal Respect to Liza N'Eliaz

Liza N'Eliaz was regarded in France and Belgium as the Queen Of Terror in the 90s, playing her aggressive form of hardcore techno there. She would join her fellow Brit compatriot Lee Aaron (of Greater Than One) by dying by brain cancer.
