He needs to have the puck to shoot it. Marner and Bunting/akerfoot losing pucks in the o-zone and marner forcing plays giving away pucks is the main culprit IMO

Is Matthews suppose to drive the line, drive the possession, play defense as a center, win puck/board battles, pass the puck to himself, and shoot while his line mates chill?
He should still have more 5v5 shots than that just by accident.

Based on, what? Your own personal insecurities?

He isn't playing well, he knows he isn't playing well, and the team has underperformed. Are you expecting him to be happy, smiling, and laughing? Then people would find a way to be mad at that and say that he isn't taking things seriously.
And you think he's staying? Based on what? Your own personal insecurities?

I think some of you need to cool it.

Matthews is all about the money and he is in the exact place to make as much of it as possible. Yes it's gonna cost us $15M a year minimum but he's definitely gonna stay, the sponsorship potential is way too much for him to pass up. He won't get that type of exposure in California, there's too many other superstar athletes to compete with over there in much bigger sports.
He's all about the money but he's also about the lifestyle and doesn't like the "negative" pressure to win. He wants to be where the weather is warm, in a country that's free, and where he can make his money but hockey ain't the centre of attention.

I guess it’s a matter of preference. No one here can say one is better or worse for someone else. It’s up to that person and what they prefer.
I just get the sense that Matthews does kind of like keeping to himself. For the amount of fans he has in a city like Toronto, he doesn’t do a crazy amount of publicity or events. Maybe I’m wrong but I think Marner does a lot more…

I think he’s really into fashion and staying low key and I think LA and Anaheim can give him access to a new market where he won’t be pestered but he can still explore his interests. I don’t mean this in a bad way but he has a “too cooll for school” vibe and i think he would like it there
THIS^.

has he considered the possibility that him scoring goals will help the team win? it's not like some side quest

No kidding. Like why would scoring fewer goals suddenly translate into more winning success if he's now got to do everything else a lot better? He's not even consistently involved 5 on 5 game to game, not like he's been Patrice Begeron out there.

at this point if keefe can't make simple adjustments like this maybe he should be let go

Setting aside whatever problems come from poor team construction this offseason, it feels like a lot of the bad vibes around this season directly come from Keefe suddenly turning into an anxious task master. Which probably comes from Dubas turning into an anxious task master. Which probably stems from the organization being undecided whether they are confidently running it back or if it's a lame duck season.

something must be seriously wrong with his wrist. if he needs a long time to recover just take the season off and come back next season healthy. no point for a goal scorer to play without being able to shoot.
Hes rarely in a position to shoot, that line isnt touching the puck much, let alone in dangerous areas

I'd be more worried if he's playing like this while totally healthy. He's skating fine, its not like he's just dogging it in any zone, but it's baffling to see him avoid taking his trademark whippy wristers

Betting that much of any bad atmosphere is due to a few guys making way more than the rest of them, yet working the same hours and performing the same task (playing hockey for a living). That alone would cause animosity in any company. Although this exists in all pro sports, a rebalancing is needed. I think there is also something else going on, but an individual thing not the whole team. Suspect the usual things that occur in any company:

clubhouse lawyers, sh** disturbers, jealousy, too much partying after work, different rules for different people, hate the boss, etc. etc. Why should hockey be any different than the rest of our jobs?

Hockey is actually the most equatable in terms of salary distribution among the main team sports. The pay gaps in other sports like the NBA/MLB between stars and depth players is astronomically larger than the gap between the NHL top guys and their depth player teammates

Pretty crazy that he only has 2 even strength goals this season.
Ya thats nuts, what's also crazy is Kampf has more even strength goals and Lily has already tied Matthews in even strength goals. We are approaching the 1/5th point.

My guess is his wrist is hurting him. Seems to have a reoccurring injury (i think wrist) that flares up and then you see him stop shooting as often, deferring to others, gets moved into different roles on PP, if he is playing with Mitch, Mitch starts to shoot more etc

Too many 'fans' triggered all the time because a player is having an off time. We don't really know what is happening behind the scenes unless he/they tells us. He'll be fine.

Roll Call

Raise your hand ✋ if you're here in this thread because you have Matthews in a hockey pool.

It's really hard to win the rocket or be the league MVP all the time.

Don't sweat it. Is Matthews healthy for the playoffs? I hope so.

Is this comparison using percentage or actual dollars?

Mcdavid makes 12.5 mil and the lowest player makes 750k. That means mcdavid makes 16.667 x more than the depth players.

Matthews can't set career highs every year, he's due for regression after being unconscious last year.
40-45 goals would be an amazing year for most players.

One thing's for sure, he ain't catching McDavid
I wouldn't bet on that. Edmonton is a dumpster fire and shit can go south really fast there. Matthews scores at least 50
