Rumor: Something brewing between CAR and CBJ?

I get the thought for sure, I just don't see how CBJ can take KK back. That's a stupid long contract. What would it look like if both teams retained? Would that help Carolina short term and CBJ long term?

The retention on KK's contract would be crazy long and pointless. His buyout is cheaper than that, since he's under 26 and it's only 1/6 of the cap (over twice the length of the deal).

I mean. I don’t agree with that at all. But hey.

I think Laine has negative value.
Laine retained for for 2M, putting him at around a 6.7 cap hit completey negates his "negative value"

He's put up 52 in 55 and 56 in 56 in his last two healthiest seasons.Youre getting a player who scores at nearly a PPG pace for less than 7M.

Even if you only consider that he's good for roughly 60ish points and 60 games, his value is still there and it's FAR from negative.

They don’t remotely have the same value. Laine is a distressed asset. Necas is not, especially he’s signed short term to a fair deal. Even retaining wouldn’t make up the difference imo but it’s irrelevant due to the Canes having only 4 top forwards. Doesn’t make sense to swap out a known value for an unknown one vs just adding the unknown another way.

Laine played less than 20 games last year and was in the NHLPA players assistance program. He is currently a question mark and is the reason CLB is willing to let him go. It’s why he has negative value and why he isn’t getting Necas or a Top 4 D from the Canes.

If the Canes acquire him it’s for picks+prospects, not a roster player.

That guy is so lucky his parents didn't name him "Lick."

Is he reliable? Never heard of him.

Luke Decock

Is that a real person/name?

Sounds like a pornstar or 13 year old me making a fake funny name

He was the Canes beat writer for the local newspaper about 10-12 years ago, but was eventually iced out of many interviews because he was becoming too critical of Karmanos/Rutherford (allegedly). He’s now just a general sports columnist for the paper that covers the Canes occasionally.

He still does a much better job than the beat writer that replaced him (Chip Alexander) because Chip is more focused on NC State than anything else. If the Canes win the Stanley Cup the same day that NC State Athletics does anything, you can guarantee Chip will favor the latter.

Not a fan of bridging Jarvis with the motivation to do so being Laine.

If Laine makes it to the deadline, when the Canes have more flexibility, then he becomes interesting.

Don't think Laine is what the Canes should go after. He's similar to Necas. Another big body that plays on the perimeter. They might go for it because they love to buy low... I think they should've made some "overpay for the guy we want/need" type deal for a few years now. Ala Tampa. They're stagnating a bit as a good regular season team.

As it stands they're both negative assets, it's a matter of what the difference is
Not sure I agree with that assessment of Laine. Yes he has missed time due to an unfortunate string of injuries and then player assistance, but given a clean bill of health his underlying numbers show him to be an impact forward.

I'm not saying the Jackets won't retain or take back cap since cap space is at a premium, but they're not going to take a loss just to move him. Expectation is that the Jackets will get a quality piece from a team or will wait the situation out. There are plenty of GM's out there who will be enticed by his size and shot.

Damn near a PPG player for the CBJ...

That's with playing after that bad concussion and sleepwalking out there. I still feel he wasn't ready to come back from that.
It's fruitless to try...I've given up as each thread degrades to the same discussion. The only thread I haven't seen "Laine is negative value" discussion (and it's early) is the Preds-CBJ thread. Give it time... Give it time...

and there's the rub.

But it's a weird rub. Do we assume injuries are linear or something?

I don't think this is a HFboards standard, if a player hasn't played in 7 months they're a completely unknown and risky commodity with negative value? I don't think I've seen that argument with others who have missed a big portion of the season.
