Yeah, I was thinking they’d take Carter, Brown, Jessiman or Getzlaf. Kostitsyn wasn’t on my radar. I really wanted Parise but knew they’d pass on him. Nowadays, Parise would have been a top 5 pick.

I was shocked that Makar was the 4OA pick in that 2017 draft.

Not sure if you are saying you are shocked he lasted to until #4?

At the time, it was seen as a bit of a risky pick for him to go that "early" in the draft, given the league he was coming from.

While there was clear skill and a lot of upside, and some insiders (Mackenzie) did report he was being considered near that top group,
I think the strong common consensus was all of Hischier, Patrick, and Heiskanen were seen as above him, and quite a few had Makar ranked a fair bit later than 4th.

And a whole year later, many were viewing it even worse and calling the Avs taking him at #4 a reach and a mistake, as his first season at UMASS didn't really produce eye-popping offensive numbers. And at that point he was also still mostly viewed as an offensive D without much defensive game.
