Who are some prospects that you thought were certain to be drafted by a team when they were still available, only to be passed for someone else?

I'll start with three:

Hunter Shinkaruk was still available by the Flames 22nd pick in 2013. Being a Calgary native and Calgary needing to replenish their prospect pool, it was shocking that they didn't pick him. In the end it didn't matter too much for either teams ngl.

JJ Peterka was available 33rd overall in 2020 for the Sens pick, and likewise it was so obvious for the Sens to pick Stützle's team mate, but they picked Järventie instead...

Calum Ritchie was available 18th overall for the Jets in 2023 and was the quintessential player that Jets scouts look for, not to mention a centre. Yet Barlow was selected over him.

Both Peterka and Ritchie being passed look like duds so far.

Well known that Shane Wright was pissed that Habs took Slaf over him. (As well as 3 other teams)

Nolan Patrick was pissed that the Devils took Hischier 1OA

ducks already had a plethora of young D in their system. forward was their biggest need
Still blows my mind that Ducks traded Theodore to Vegas to stop them taking Manson.

...if we want to PAINFULLY into the recent past:

Montreal passing on Brady Tkachuk for Kotkan-nogamie...

2016 draft the way so many teams wanted nothing to do with the tkachuk family. i agreed with them at the time so not strictly responsive to the thread.

2017 draft was one where even at the time all the excitement started at pick 3.

2018 draft kotkaniemi and hayton as reaches and detroit passing on hughes after their coach just had him at the worlds and he played that season in michigan (i can understand in general why hughes dropped before detroit but detroit had no excuse)

I'm still in shock we got Matthew Tkachuk at 6th in 2016.

A bunch of us on the CFHF board were at a draft party and I don't recall anyone saying "what if we got Tkachuk at 6th" cause it didn't seem plausible.

#1 - Toronto was picking Matthews, that was a no brainer.

#2 - Winnipeg was picking Laine, also a no brainer.

#3 - Kekalainen has to be picking one of the Finns. He's probably got some inside scoop that nobody else does. Nope, he picks PLD.

#4 - Damn, Oilers are gonna take Tkachuk. Nope, Puljujarvi!

#5 - Okay, then it's no brainer, Vancouver is definitely taking Tkachuk. What?? Juolevi???

#6 - Flames pick Tkachuk!?

I know a lot of people questioned his skating ability, but I don't think any of us at the draft party expected him to drop that low. I was certain he was going to go 3rd or 4th.

Dallas
passing on Barzal for garbage ass Gurianov.
Passing on Fowler for Campbell
Larkin for Honka
Farabee for Dellandrea
were all WTF moments

Taking Tufte instead of Debrincat, wasn't "shocking" because of the FO philosophy of Size>Talent but I was still holding out hope they'd draft for ceiling instead of Floor.... Then seeing Tage turn into something... they grabbed the wrong big guy.

I also remember being pissed they took Oettinger over Tolvanen (not because i thought Oettinger was bad, but you should never draft a goalie in the 1st round, but at least that worked out)

Still shocked the Habs took Carey Price over Brule, lol.

I’m still shocked they took Kostitsyn. The guy I wanted was Zach Parise, but I thought they’d take a big NAmerican forward.

2016 Draft. Buffalo picking at No. 8 and could really use a high-end D prospect (having drafted Eichel and Reinhart the previous 2 years and having traded away McNabb and Zadorov). Sergachev, McAvoy and Chychrun (and Bean) were all available, and pretty much everyone assumed we'd be picking one of them. Tim Murray passes on the layup and takes Alex Nylander.

Which is why I don't understand those that say Dallas has such excellent drafting and scouts. Take away 2017 and 2021 and the Stars drafting looks meh at best and pretty bad at worst.

1995 was the first draft that I watched, but I didn't have an informed opinion until 1998 after finding Hockey's Future.

1997: Islanders had picks #4 + #5. At the time they were loaded with young defensemen and had depth in net. So using at least one if not both picks on forwards Daniel Tkaczuk / Sergei Samsonov seemed likely. But they surprised folks by taking Roberto Luongo and Eric Brewer. Although comically the following year they were split between Robyn Regehr and Mike Rupp but then chose Rupp because of positional need.

2000: Rick DiPietro didn't opt into the draft until early May which was an unusual monkey wrench. There had been rumors that the Islanders were considering DiPietro at #1 but that seemed odd since they already had Luongo. I fully expected them to take Heatley or Gaborik.

2003: I was a little surprised when the Sharks passed on Ryan Suter if only because his uncle had just retired as a Shark in 2002. And the insert the Pierre McGuire tirade when the Islanders passed on Zach Parise.

2005: This remains the only draft I haven't watched since 1995. I was shocked when Anaheim passed on Jack Johnson for Bobby Ryan. Also surprised when Minnesota/Montreal bypassed Gilbert Brule. When the Sharks traded up, my buddy texted "OMG we're getting Kopitar" only for them to take Devin Setoguchi.

2007: LA was loaded with young forwards but had little on defense, so most expected them to take Karl Alzner. But Dean Lombardi wanted a puck moving D, so they shocked a bunch of people and took Thomas Hickey. Lombardi would tell a story to STH about him being a young GM with San Jose in 1996. He didn't have the nerve to go against the consensus and took Andrei Zyuzin even though he didn't really like him. Meanwhile Calgary went off the board for Derek Morris but nobody remembered that since Morris panned out.

2008: Devils had a need for RHD and local kid John Carlson was expected to go in the range of their original pick (#21). Devils traded down a couple times and took Mattias Tedenby at #24 which didn't seem to fit a need.

2010: Fowler/Gormley both dropped as teams picking in the top 10 had a greater need at forward. Was shocked when the Rangers and Stars passed on them. The draft was in LA, so some thought it would be a fairy tale if the Kings took SoCal native Emerson Etem at #19. But they'd end up trading for Derek Forbort instead and then Beau Bennett would be the first California kid off the board.

2011: Devils were still in need for RHD and I wasn't sure if Adam Larsson would drop to #4. Colorado had just signed Joakim Lindstrom who spent the season as Larsson's teammate. I read too much into that as if they were signing him to be a familiar face to help acclimate Larsson to the NHL.

2012: Penguins traded Jordan Staal and got pick #8. I thought for sure they would take Filip Forsberg or Jacob Trouba, but they opted for Derrick Pouliot.

2013: Florida and Tampa passing on Seth Jones was a surprise for me.

2014: Sharks head scout Tim Burke is based in the Boston area so they've had some history of taking local prospects. Thatcher Demko had a solid freshman year at Boston College and was a California kid. I thought it was a perfect match. Sharks took Nikolai Goldobin instead.

2015: One extra layer of Boston passing on Matt Barzal was that they had just signed his linemate Justin Hickman to an ELC a few months before the draft.

2016: I remember Jim Benning giving an interview a couple months before the draft and he freely said that they didn't think it was a great draft for D at the top of the draft. So I was surprised when they took Olli Juolevi.
