The guy dry heaves when statistics come up and was on the Islanders beat last year. York played the Islanders two times last season, and I’d bet those are the only times he saw him. Exactly what is he basing this opinion on?

Also:

York only has 1 year under his belt of having Tortorella’s stamp of approval. That’s what matters here. Kurz is probably one of those types that think this past season was really the only good year Sanheim’s had in his career for similar reasons.

In reality you have a two year sample of York putting in positive seasons on top of entering his prime & having pedigree. There’s really no reason to not believe he’s a good secondary player at least going forward.

There should absolutely be urgency on the Flyers end to try & lock York up long term asap. Do you really want to repeat the same scenario again that you did with Sanheim?

An 8 year extension for York would begin he was 24, and end when he was 32. Those should be his best years.

Because they gave Sanheim a second two-year deal before signing him long term, he will be 35 when his contract expires. He's been very durable and is a strong skater, so that should be OK, but there's obviously more risk the older a player gets.

One comparison I thought of is Bouwmeester who had a poor 34 year old season due to injury, bounced back for a solid 35 year old season where he won the Cup with the Blues, and then he retired after his going into cardiac arrest during a game in February, 2020.

Charlie is clueless. you need top 5 talent. it's almost impossible to win without it.

i did a quick look back, and it seems every team post lockout that won a cup (2005 till now) had at least one player that was drafted in the top 5. most teams had multiple.

so 20 years of recent data says you cannot win a cup without having at least one top 5 drafted pick on your roster.

let's look at this year's final.

Edmonton (3)
McDavid (1st overall)
Draisaitl (3rd overall)
Nugent-Hopkins (1st overall)

Florida (5)
Barkov (2nd overall)
Reinhart (2nd overall)
Ekblad (1st overall)
Tkachuk (6th overall) (not top 5 but close enough)
Bennett (4th overall)

and since Charlie brought up Vegas, they have Eichel and Pietrangelo on their roster that were both drafted top 5. a 1C and 1D.

if the Flyers are not gonna tank, which we know they won't, they need to then make savvy trades and FA signings to acquire said high end talent (like Vegas did), but given recent history with historic levels of incompetence and mismanagement, it's clear no one has any faith in this organization to be able to accomplish that.

Rather than move assets for Eichel this team decided overpay for Fisto, so everyone who thinks the Flyers will trade their way to having elite talent should probably think on this.

I don't know if the Sabres would have traded him in the East, but the Flyers should have at least tried.

I also thought Hextall should have offered Laughton + Lehtera + the 19th overall to get ROR in 2018. At the time I think that's better than what they got from St Louis.
