The Gold Cup Final showing USA vs. Mexico rated 41% higher than the final game of the Stanley Cup Finals. The numbers are probably even understated in favor of the soccer match considering it only tabulates one of the two stations that aired the soccer game.

Well....

The demographic changes in the USA in the last 20 years support that. I expect that soccer will displace hockey as a 'major sport' if it has not done so already. I pointed this out before but was roundly criticized.

ok, as racist as this might sound, its true.

there are many more mexicans in the US (most likely soccer fans) than there are canadiens (more likely to be hockey fans). i would bet that you would find the english language broadcast on FSC to be a lot lower than telemundo's.

One thing to keep in mind, many American soccer fans like me who either don't get Fox Soccer Channel or don't have cable watched the game on Univision. So not all of those numbers reported from the Spanish language channel belong to the latinos.

I don't know a whole lot about television marketing, but I understand there's one statistic that is rarely mentioned yet very relevent called Viewers Per Viewing Household. Which I believe is NOT included in the ratings you read about, if I'm correct. Surprisingly, this stat describes how many people sit around a single TV, and from what I understand, soccer VPVH's are astronomical by average standards, something like 7+ people per TV. So multiply 7 by the ratings reported and you have a more accurate number of viewers.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. :D

Not racist; simply fact. Throw in people from other countries who love soccer (it is the international sport of the world), and there you go.

True.....I went to a World Cup qualifying match for the 2002 Cup in Columbus US vs Mexico...and the crowd was nearly 50-50. Most just from the Ohio area. You really can't put too much into this stat.

You probably got roundly criticized because MLS is a joke. Soccer probably already is a "bigger" sport in the US than hockey, by certain demographics having 100% penetration, but the MLS isn't even close to the NHL. Watch the next MLS game of the week and be amazed by how many people don't show up. The quality of play is "blech" compared with the rest of the world, and that, combined with the horrible
quality of the FIFA group, is why the US embarasses themselves at the World Cup every time they're not playing Mexico. It will beat the NHL when hell freezes over.

I don't understand how a tournament that comes around every couple of years, which has its dream competitors for viewers, can be compared to an NHL final with not-so-good teams as "markets" go.

If the Final was Guadalope versus Canada, how many people in the US would be watching? 3? Or hell, the US versus either of those teams, what would that draw?

I think we might have found the key component in the rating, folks.

When David Beckham plays his first game for the Galaxy next month, I really do believe that the MLS will be the focal point of the entire sports media's attention for that entire week. Unlike the NHL, the MLS is shown on ABC/ESPN, and that Beckham game (the merits of his talent can be best debated in other threads) will be a ratings bonanza. Unfortunately for the NHL, ESPN is often what drives the major sports stories in America, and they will build up that moment like no other. All of their shows (Sportscenter, PTI, ATH, Cold Pizza, Between the Lines, etc...) will have Beckham/MLS related content. Given the fact that adidas is also a major contributor to the Beckham deal, and given their vast marketing machine, they will pump millions of dollars worth of resources into promoting his arrival as well.

Even though to many the MLS is considered a joke league, I really do think that it will become somewhat popular this summer because of that increased exposure to the casual fan. What could threathen the NHL ultimately is that the MLS has a tremendous buzz factor with the arrival of Beckham, while it seems that even one of the greatest teenage talents the NHL has ever seen has hardly created any buzz for the casual American sports fan. That's why as an NHL fan, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the MLS's status in America.

Yes it will be a sideshow. The MLS might get lucky and sell out Galaxy games while the rest of the league pads the house for 10k a game. Next year we will be back to the status quo of soccer apologists jamming the game down our throat like they have for the past 30 years.

Soccer's a lot more popular in the United States because most kids from all backgrounds and nationalities all grow up playing Soccer in school for cheap and thus can follow the game....
where hockey is exclusive.
Hockey equipment can cost hundreds per year, renting arenas and enrolling your kid in a hockey team can cost hundreds... where soccer does not cost a fraction of that. All you need is a ball and an empty field with grass. A sport any kid can play.

-ESPN/ABC contract with soccer
-demographic changes (if this game doesnt include mexico its rated way lower)

these two reasons are what can make soccer/mls higher in US

It's a no brainer that everything rates way higher on ESPN/ABC instead of the outdoor life network channel 844. kind of a useless thread without a foundation for equality in the ratings. It's silly to compare spanish speaking univision with a somewhat small viewership with mexicans included in it as the majority. stupid article.

"The United States' 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Mexico on Sunday received a 2.5 fast national rating on Univision, the network said Tuesday. That translates to 2.83 million households, nearly double the 1.48 million homes that watched the 2005 Gold Cup final between the United States and Panama."

That's it in a nutshell, mexico included=higher ratings because mexicans in this country.

Again, stupid comparison.

This is just one game and the Stanley cup is seven.

I'd be so sad if Soccer is more popular then Hockey . The reason why Soccer doesn't succeed in NA is cause of Basketball. It's a better sport and just as cheap to play .

Well thats obviously debatable. IMO Soccer is the best sport in the world. MLS is still a bad league for talent, but it is getting more respectable. In a few years I think it will be even better, but will never surpass the top european leagues though,

sure ghost....thats why the mls gets 100K viewers if they are lucky for a game on ESPN networks.

the usa playing mexico is the premier american soccer match.

nice comparison.

and if you want to go by who plays soccer in the usa..then its the most popular sport in teh united states.

I dont care what you say anymore....you hate that the NHL over-expanded into the states and blame that for the league falling apart.

well the league will break there all time attendance next year again...theyre not popular they are dead.
