So Larkin Made Some Interesting Comments.

Debrincat is the only significant move I can think of other than trading Mantha, Bert and Hronek. His FA signings have been fairly underwhelming and none were higher end pieces.

Because high end FA's generally don't want to sign with on a team that is a bubble playoff team at best.

Kane and Chiarot have been great signings. Talbot and Maatta were good signings. Copp was functional. Compher was pretty good for one year but not so much this last year.

Tank and Gus were disappointments, and Holl has been by far his worst FA signing.

I'd prefer to avoid either extreme (doing nothing or doing something awful). There's a wide spectrum of possibilities in between.

On the simpler end, it's not like it's impossible to deal lesser picks/prospects for a 4/5 defenseman that can actually play defense and PK.

I would bet a lot of fake internet dollars that is at the top of Yzerman's list for the offseason. But the price for that in the trade deadline was pretty steep and I don't blame him for standing pat.

One would think, right?
Then you would agree that 1) such a trade is plausible, 2) it would improve the roster, 3) it would not depreciate assets to the point of negatively affecting the overall rebuild, and 4) it therefore has no drawback, assuming that a suitable trade partner could be found?

Kane has been here like a year. Kane has also gotten to experience 3 Cups and 143 playoff games to Dylan Larkin's 5. Larkin has given exactly the kind of answers you would want want plenty of times before. He has done that actually pretty much his whole career, so far.

Doing nothing worked out great for us...
The Devil you know Frky,...the devil you know

Right--even if an impact contributor isn't added to the top six, you can make a meaningful change to the team by fleshing out an actually functioning third or fourth line. Seriously, it's not a sit on your hands or sell the farm scenario here. You can do the above while also letting the kids come up. At the very least it would be more watchable than having Holl play the puck like he's using a shovel every night.

Yes, but I think 4) is a big point. My consistent refrain about trades is that you can't force another team to trade you anything. You can really like a player and know their value, that does not mean, however, that you can simply force another team to trade that player to you and not some other team. This is a big issue because certain types of players are less available than others. My genuine hope is that we can use the trade market to find one or two solid defensemen that would help the middle and bottom pair. At the same time, I don't want to force something and substantially overpay. I am far more concerned about over paying in the trade market than free agency.

I think Larkin wants a culture switch and that is a fair ask.

Yzerman has never projected any type of expectation of winning since he arrived.

This year (before the season), He was flat out asked about making the playoffs…
Yzerman said ‘I don’t know, maybe’. This is after missing by one point.

The last 2 years we were in playoff position at the deadline and crickets. Yzerman just shrugged his shoulders and said we’ll see what happens.

He employed Lalonde for years and Lalonde never expected to win a game. After every loss he just shrugged his shoulders or even proclaimed the team played well.

Larkin has been here through a lot and I think he wants urgency. No more half answers. No more pushing the finish line further away. He wants an expectation of success. And I think he is trying to angle for massive improvements this off-season.

I don’t think it’s professional the way he answered the questions. But I think he decided rocking the boat might put pressure on the right people to bring in some NHL talent improvements.
At this moment in time, I just have a hard time seeing the Wings make it to a conference finals let alone a cup with the roster and prospect pool they have. Again, like Nashville 15 years ago.

Ok? That's not typical. You would really rather have Montreal's roster and prospect pool over Detroit's? I wouldn't. I'm very disappointed in Larkin's comments. You disappear annually when we need you the most and then complain you didn't get enough help? Total bitch move.
Yes, quite easily. The only argument before was that Detroit was further along in their rebuild. Well Montreal is in the playoffs and their prospect pool hasn't changed.

EDIT: Sorry RW fans, didn't mean to invade your board. I thought this was main boards!

Trade his salary off the books first.
Your plan is to trade away the best player on the team (in your own opinion) and then just see what happens? We haven't found a better player than him in the 10 years he's been here, but just get rid of him with no follow up plan?

Did anyone catch the full interview? Did Larkin have any criticism of himself?
Said he picked up some injuries during the 4 nations tournament.

Said he went out and tried his best to play through. ‘I played in all 82 games, but I wasn’t nearly as effective as I wanted to be in all of them.” ( referring to after 4 nations games)

Said he doesn’t know yet if he will need surgery. But doesn’t really specify the injury/ies.

This is why people saying "you're reading too much into a media comment!!!" are sorely mistaken IMO. This is pro sports, the end of season media availabilty matters a lot, and these comments matter. We saw plenty of Vancouver fans saying "it's just media making s*** up!!!" for months with the JT/Pettersson drama, and they never even said anything this damning to the media.

Larkin's comments are a very, very, very bad look and I'd imagine Yzerman is fuming given how much he seems to value professionalism in the organization and how he was as a captain.

IMO Larkin has just driven the likelihood of him being traded up by a lot. And that sucks because Yzerman has not shown he is good at trading when he's doing it out of frustration (see: Walman). I hope we don't dump him for poor value.

But he should not be captain.
That’s a good point. Yzerman’s trades of late haven’t been stellar. If Larkin is stripped of the C, I can’t imagine how the room would feel. This will either be resolved and moved past or Larkin traded. Either way, unless Yzerman strikes it big, the Wings could finally get that lotto pick!

I know he revealed he was hurt and that effected his play.

I guess since we're going full witch hunt, you can spin that as "making excuses" instead of taking accountability.

Larkin couldn’t have handled this two timeline situation any worse. It’s a delicate balance and everyone has to buy in when mixing an influx of youth with older vets. There was a chance to be good while developing our more important youth players if there was buy in but homie wants to abandon the next 15 years to sneak him into the playoffs for a run or two. Yzerman laughs in your face Dylan

That's fair. But it's only a big concern if you get fixated on adding a SPECIFIC player. ("Must trade for this guy.") Your options open up a whole lot more if you're looking at any of 7-8 candidates for a depth defensive defensemen who PK, rather than just the top 1-2 players for the role.

Even if half the league suddenly won't answer your calls, you're still looking at around a dozen players who fit the bill on paper. Then you can still get 11 rejections as long as you get one team who says yes.

A similar approach also applies to adding a forward, although the percentages obviously change based on scarcity. But if Yzerman is calling everybody about everybody, as if he wants to make TEN trades this summer, then he absolutely can afford to strike out 80-90 percent of the time and still come away successful. That's the level of determination and thorough use of available resources I want to see, instead of, "Well, we just aren't ready yet. We have to be patient." (As if one more draft pick in 2027 is the missing piece to turn it all around.)

Debrincat was a great trade. Trades that actually matter. Trading Matta and Walman are moves nobody remembers in 3 years for a reason they move the needle absolutely nothing. Hopping on Larkin’s side here is absurd. He shit the bed 3 seasons in a row down the stretch when he could have proved he was worth a damn and is now cry about it. His character is on full display regardless of the narratives people have chosen to run with

Your last paragraph makes me shake my damn head. How do you say this unironically and I’m supposed to take your opinion of team building seriously

1000% agree with all of this. When it gets tough he folds. But I don't think it's all his fault. He is in over his head. He is not the guy that can carry you to a cup or even the playoffs for that matter. #2C with flashes of #1C when he is on but he can't sustain that level of play for an entire season.
Now people are saying he’s only a 2C? Where are we going to get our 1C from? We missed that opportunity by signing Mediocre vets in ‘22-‘23 that prevented us from getting a higher pick.

Honestly I hope he dumps Holl, Copp, Compher, Gus,Tarasenko even Ras. Literally attach prospects and picks to dump these guys and use the cap wiser. That's too money going to these plugs. Get younger if we are going to suck anyway.
Dumping the dead weight is the right course of action but not Yzerman’s M.O. right now.

It’s like if the avalanche had decided to stop preparing for the future and build around landeskog. Time will tell how dumb this though is

Impressive pools? The red wings have a lot of depth prospects. Raymond, Seider and Edvinsson are the best from his picks. Cossa and Augustine have a chance to be very good to. But they need more high end offensive skill.
The Red Wings have consistently been ranked as a top 5 team in terms of young talent since Yzerman returned. This was not the case under Holland, as his North American scouting was flat out awful. You may disagree, and that's fine, but the majority of people who follow this closely do not agree with you.
