Just caught a clip of Bill Murray's ranking of all the Weekend Update hosts. Whole bit came across as a giant tribute to Norm McDonald (rightfully so, IMO). You could see Bill breaking up a bit when talking about Norm.

Was pretty classy, nice job Bill!!!

I found that bit to be the best of the bunch.

All of the criticism is from people who didn't see the original sketch.

They cut it short before they could show them actually shaking hands like in the original.

Yeah, I felt that skit ended prematurely, like they cut it short for air time.

No, it's classifying this one older white gentleman wearing a MAGA hat as having a lot more in common with black people than one would expect.

Juxtaposition and exaggeration are the twin hallmarks of comedy.

It backfired this time because the time and care wasn't put into the sketch to establish that properly as they did in the original.

There also was no hysteria the first time he played the character because how the media weaponizes outrage today is a totally different dimension and unfortunately some people who can't think for themselves fall for it.

The first sketch was done very well and clearly defined what the joke was. The second one was meant to throw a jab that didn't land because they left out the context. It was purposely done. Why would you run the whole skit and throw hanks in at the end whose only objective was to not shake hands and to say we should do a white Jeopardy and get you on?

For the first two seasons it was not that political but since about season 3 or 4 it skidded into the political satire arena more

It's an anniversary show so they were bringing back a bunch of characters/sketches all night. coherency be damned. It just so happens that Hanks' "Doug" is the most memorable character from the recurring sketch of Black Jeopardy.

I checked and Chevy made a Ford pardoning Nixon joke on the first Weekend Update. So SNL was apolitical for about a half hour.

He's a poster from my board and he follows me around other threads trying to poke me. I laid it on him pretty thick back in the day. I'm saying that it was so long ago that he doesn't even remember why he's compelled to always try to troll me and it's pretty sad that he hasn't gotten over it. He's an internet bully and very negative.
