Our magic number (in points) for the chasing teams are as follows:

NYI - 15 points
NYR - 14 points
CBJ - 16 points
MTL - 16 points - ADDED

For those not familiar with the "magic number" concept it means that we need a total of 15 points to be either gained by us or lost by the Islanders to mathematically clinch a spot over them. The number is 14 for the Rangers. 16 for the Jackets and Habs.

The Isles play both of the other teams down the stretch and the Rangers only play the Isles. We get three against the Jackets the rest of the way. Those will obviously be big games.

NYI max points is 96 (minus Ottawa's 81) = 15 .. but I think we need to add 1 more point to make it 16 so we do not have to worry about tie breakers.

We are the second worst team in the league at G/60 against an EN. The top team, Tampa, scores at 3 times the rate we do...

It's crazy how much they collapse to close out games. They don't play Stützle much with the opponents goalie pulled, and nobody else seems to be able to skate the puck out of the zone.

They are winning lots of close games which is nice. Next step is to start burying teams though. They have a lot of trouble playing aggressively in the 3rd with a lead.

Would love to see them hit teams with good counter attacks when the opponent starts activating their defence trying to push to make a comeback. Keep the structure, but look for chances to pounce rather than sitting back and flipping the puck out at every chance.

I loosely factored in tiebreakers. For example we would almost certainly lose one to the NYR. The others I think we'd likely win, depending on how each team gets it's remaining points.

So for the Rangers the number reflects beating their max points by one. For the others it reflects a tie.

It is a bit frustrating, but I tell myself that last year, with Korpisalo in tow, they'd have lost a game like that 6-4 by the end, so it is still progress and showing they can squeeze it out has value. Playing in close games and bending but not completely breaking is a big part of playoff hockey.

I think we bent a bit too much. Bending 1 GA is enough; not 2 or 3!

As long as we get the win in the end, I'm happy enough, but agreed, that's a little bit much for my liking and there should be some coaching adjustments to try to be a little more aggressive and avoid that.

He should have put to the open ice for Brady to chase imo, if Brady gets it you have a chance at the net, or to kill off more time, if he doesn't, you kill off 15 secs or so. That's a shot you take with a two goal lead
