Post-Game Talk: Smiling Stu Shutouts x 2!

Vegas' vaunted depth failed them. Or it would seem. A lot of credit to Edmonton who played low event flawless defensive hockey. Gave them little of quality scoring chances, and not many PP opportunities.
Hill was great in goal for them. Kept every game close.
Thought Hanafin was invisible - maybe a good thing as a shut down defender.
Theodore was outclassed and only noticeable in a bad way. How did Theodore make Team Canada or get this reputation as a top guy?
Eichel was clearly their best player - fast, great playmaking, and has a good shot. But he seemed to be the only one generating offense.
Karlsson was their next best.
Hertl played physical two way hockey, but didn't do anything offensively.

It is strange how he still isn't hired. Maybe Kings will give him a chance lol
Coaching more than any other part of the NHL is a "who you know" type deal. Even Knoblauch got the job not because he earned it, but because someone who he worked with got a job that gave them an opportunity to give him a chance.

Woodcroft getting the interim title despite not really seeming to have full confidence of management, and then not even making it through his first full contract might be a significant roadblock for him. All that power-stancing and arrogance in interviews might have rubbed some the wrong way too, but Eakins was much worse in that regard and had no problems getting another shot despite being a much worse coach, so who knows.

Vegas played old and slow. But media would never mention that. Just how they are big, bruising, experienced vs the Oilers and their questionable goaltending.

IMO, aside from Eichel, none of their players stood out. Maybe Stone shouldn't have gone to 4 Nations and just LTIRd it till the end of the year...

Hell of a redemption leg for Skinner, 2 shutouts. And in this game, he made some real saves when needed. Kapanen had a quiet game up until scoring that one. See? Play a straight line game, take straight lines to the net, and bang it from within 5-10 feet when the ice sucks so much.

Sphincters relax all over Oilers fandom tonight. Get some well earned rest now, f*** YEAH eat it Vegas. Not sure if it's just me reading too much into it but the handshake between McDavid and no. 2 wasn't that friendly. Good. Looking forward now to whomever it is between CAR / DAL. Virtual high fives for everyone of us here!!!!
I don’t think they’ve ever been all that friendly. Eichel effing hated being second banana to McDavid in their draft year.

I'm so happy but holy hell... my heart! Kapi.. all the times I shit on you in the reg season.. forget about it!

Skinner was incredible too. I didn't want to mention it earlier because I was afraid of jinxing it!
I trashed Kapi a lot too (but to be fair he deserved a lot of it!!), but flowers and kudos to him for stepping up his game when he got the chance. Big energy hitting game before and a determined robust game winner in the clincher.

Their core lacks the "it" factor outside of maybe Nylander.

I'll give you an anecdote:

After the Leafs won their first playoff series in 20 years or something I was partying with a bunch of Leafs fans (Oilers were dispatching the Kings during this conversation) when one of them showed me a tweet, now I can't find it, but it was basically a cellphone video of the Leafs dressing room and they were celebrating like it was baseball in there. Tweets about extra cases of beer being delivered to the room, etc.

Now I didn't raise this until after they got dumpstered by the Panthers but I questioned the leadership in the room. Why were they celebrating a 1st round victory so heavily and so publicly? Like listen to their postgame interviews, it sounds like they won the cup.

Compare that with us. We got Connor McDavid taking strips off journalists in the postgame. There's no beer, there's no crazy celebration. We're off to the conference final, 3rd in 4 years. The job is not done.
I definitely think there was a sense of relief that year when they finally won a playoff round and were just "Happy to be there" in round 2, along with a nice dose of arrogance concerning the Panthers.

I also think back to 2022 and the teams' respective game 7s. The Oilers refused to lose against the Kings while the Leafs played a pretty pedestrian game against the Lightning and lost.

I’m thinking back to our dzone structure last time we played Vegas compared to the last two games. Talk about exact opposites.

That and the complete shit show that was “zone defence” when he switched to that after the playoffs the following season show that Woodcock was a good quote and that’s about it.

Skinner has had a rough year and a rough start to the playoffs, so glad to see him right the ship. I was amongst the throng who criticized him and trashed him relentlessly, so I'll man up, and give him his worship now. Tried to never get personal with him, only the shit performances. After hearing the thoughts on here of how his teammates couldn't stand him and would not play for him, I'll leave the last word to our lord and captain,

"Hopefully it shuts up a lot of people who were talking about him"

Yeah the main forum is pathetic.

In pre series thread, people were saying Vegas had better forward depth. I guess the LA series didn’t count.

Its going to be the same thing with Dallas. Oilers depth outplayed Dallas depth last year and our forwards depth (and our defensive depth) are better than last year.

We will see how it goes. Rantanen is a big add for Dallas. I think they have been looked pretty average these playoffs though outside of Rantanen.

I think Edmonton has better forwards and defense than Dallas. I think they will have problems with our physicality too.

They have Oettinger though. But let’s not forget that Skinner outplayed him last year and is trending up.
Dallas was the only team that purposely went out and tried to get a game breaker to match McDrai. They knew we were destined to meet in the WCF again. Won’t matter Oil in 5/6 book it. Then we have home ice and get revenge on either the Canes or Cats.

I'm hoping Dallas emotional series win over Colorado was their Stanley Cup.... they can drop down in intensity and call it a season, happy with what they accomplished. Oilers have to move on.
