Post-Game Talk: Slapping the Pinecone

Trocheck explained his decision to pass there. He said the backchecker prevented him from getting to his forehand and he was afraid he was going to just be able to put it into the goalies chest. Obviously he read the play wrong. I don't think that the backchecker was in that position. But the real issue with this team is a reluctance to just do the very basic hockey plays. Just get it to the net. You have 2 players attacking the net, 1 Cane and the guy Trocheck was passing to. There's a decent chance a rebound bounces off the goalie and goes in off the leg, skate, stick of those rushing players. That counts the same as a brilliant drop pass thru the legs. The Rangers don't get that. Style points don't matter. Put it on net. Stop passing for the perfect open net chance. As we saw with Krieder, even that play doesn't always work.

As angry as I am at Trocheck I don't think a big rebound landing perfectly on a Rangers' stick is any more likely to work than a drop pass. There are two reasons for this comment. One, it DIDN'T work. So even if the play had 99% chance of working but didn't, it's not a good look. Two, fans do the exact opposite of what they claim players to do. They have a bias for greasy goals because it looks more blue collar and tough or whatever.

In the end I don't think a rebound was a higher chance of working. It just would have been less embarassing if he got it on net and got saved.

You're slapping too much pinecone.

What i do know, is that a shot on goal, potential greasy goal off a rebound, wouldn't have ended up in our net.
