A perfect low-risk, low-cost add to the Sharks who desperately need defenders with some puck-moving capability. Apparently a good deal for the Leafs too who needed to clear cap.

Adds another RH shot defensemen to an organization that is overwhelmingly LH currently. Does this mean Thompson is headed back to the Barracuda or are there other plans?

Eh, good trade for both teams.

Liljegren is fairly toolsy but just doesn't seem to have it between the ears. It's not the end of the world, he could eventually learn enough to become an everyday player, but not on a supposed contending team, especially since he's 25 and not 21-22.

The Sharks are about as close to a perfect landing spot for him as he could want.

Lilly will be a better player in SJ than he was in Toronto.

Don't forget outside of what one game this season he has only ever played for Keefe as a head coach (Marlies and Leafs).

HE will take a few games or he will get tones of minutes and a vote of confidence (both were lacking here in Toronto for him). I predict he will round out into a very solid top 4D for them.

Liljegren just wasn’t given an opportunity in Toronto by the coaching staff who made up their minds about him early on and stubbornly stuck to those opinions even when he became a $3M player.

Well on pace for less points this year than last year with the Leafs. Other than that not sure how he’s looked.

Happy the Leafs moved on from him as they leafs are looking good at the top of the Atlantic

He's been okay. Significant improvement for the Sharks, but he's a third pair dman. Given his age I could see extending him next year as he don't have anything at RHD, but he shouldn't be in any team's top 4.

Do people still remember what an all time great Liljegren would become after being drafted 17th overall. No hesitation that he was passed over 16 times for a reason.

All others picked before him were forgetten. This was Toronto’s pick and this was it, a steal.

Now I read comments, how happy people are that the Leafs moved on from him.

Indeed. People do get hyped for what prospects might become and then move on when they don't pan out as hoped.

How ridiculous of them.

Happens every year with guys who are hyped early and drop on draft day. Lambos, Tolvanen, Benson and others being good examples. Natural for fans who aren’t as tuned in as GMs and scouts to think these picks are steals.

No slight correction, happy they moved on and hyped without any foundation.

well the foundation was that when he was 16/17, he was considered a potential top 3 overall pick. And that kind of notoriety gave him more recognition than the average 17th overall pick. Similar to a Brad Lambert I'd say. Even if the prospects stock has fallen off, it feels more exciting that it was much higher at one point as it belies the potential to regain that status in the future, would be the psychology behind it.

for a more extreme example, it feels more exciting to draft Sean Day in the 3rd round than a guy you never heard of because hey, I've heard of that guy he had potential as a kid

Yes. Is this your first time seeing a prospect not work out or something? This isn't like a new thing. Welcome to pro sports.

Bob Mckenzie had forsberg at 3 I believe and he fell to Washington at 11.

Buium had a similar fall this draft, but people still seem pretty excited for him, but I guess wild fans just think they're smarter than GMs and scouts?

You are trying to dunk on Leaf fans for your fantasy world where every pick if a GOAT, but just come off bad here. Every prospect that is ranked at the top of the draft and fall in the first round get hype. Hell, Leaf fans are allowed to be excited about prospects in general.

My fantasy world, just a quick search. Somewhere a topic of draft day must exist too.
Indeed many prospects get hyped and Toronto’s fanbase is huge but I all take that into consideration.

What we had to witness with Timothy Liljegren was something else, all that for a 17th overall pick. That makes it interesting to me.

So in your world, Liljegren is trash and never had good stretches? Because I can assure you he absolutely has had elite stretches. Just can never maintain them.

I will not be shocked to hear sometime this season or next Sharks fans saying how he turned a corner and is a legit top 4 dman. And then 5 months later they will be like "hmm maybe not"
