Because the Leafs are so top-heavy, they employ a "strategy" of giving a bunch of guys 1-way deals at low cap hits, and "seeing who makes the cut." They're also one of a few teams that's perfectly happy to pay a guy $1m to play in the AHL (see Clifford, Kyle). Good teams are also more likely to lose players on waivers than bad teams.

That being said, I can only imagine how frustrating this must be for Dubas, as he has been completely unable to accumulate any centre depth that can be stashed at the AHL level.

Probably the right answer

Nice pickup. Such a cheap contract for someone who can do a bit of everything. I would think a lot of contenders would want someone like him and don’t understand why the Leafs couldn’t have gotten at least a late pick for him.

Lol Leafs fans will literally use anything to make themselves feel special. I guess now it’s waiver claims. Y’all need to be introduced to the concept of coincidence.

What's up with the every waived Toronto player gets claimed commentary?

Other than Brooks and Dzingel, haven't all their waived players this season went through unclaimed? Unless I missed some, I just looked at those were the only two this season. I could have missed some. I don't really care that much.
Didn't Richie clear waivers?

Ultimately, Dubas' inability to "assess the market" has certainly been a downfall for him.

This was obviously an attempt to stash an NHL calibre player on the AHL team for injuries, and like with Brooks, Amadio; it failed.

Perhaps the Leafs don't care as much as other teams regarding finding marginal return on the players they lose via waivers? They are a destination for European UDFA like few other teams. Perhaps they just aren't as obsessed over it in the way some other teams and their fans are?

It doesn’t make us feel special, it’s annoying.

The Leafs literally have lost a player in 1/8th of the leagues total waiver claims since 2018. That’s significant.

Is that not the point of waivers though? To keep teams from stashing a bunch of vets/NHL talent in the minors.
What other org has an Farm team brimming with the Dzingels of the world, just waiting to cash in on all those late round picks at the deadline?
