Jeez that's a lot of years but the Sharks had to do it. AAV is pretty decent though.

The benefit they do have, is that if he slows down, he can always be moved to forward in his last few years to shelter him....if they need to.

9% of the cap for a Norris contender who keeps himself in unbelievable shape. It may suck in 5 years, but in five years Jumbo will be retiring (if we are lucky) and the Sharks will be going into full re-build, so who cares.

Nhl needs to make max contracts 6 years. Any top player in the league has this and is bad for team and other players. Ducks have 3 in getzlaf, kesler, Perry. Sucks in a few years.

I really don't care what the deal looks like in 6 years. A lot can change (another lockout with more compliance buyouts?).

It's important to lock up the superstars while you can.

$8M per year is good, but not for 8 years. This contract will suck in about 4-5 years.

Beauty contract for Burns ...for atleast a few more years.

Was hoping he would've tested the market...would've loved him in Edmonton.

I would be deeply concerned about the term, but that's more an indictment of the entire League and the contracts the free agent market is handing out rather than San Jose in particular.

The HF logic is unreal. A contending team re-signing a top 10 defenseman for a perfectly reasonable contract for an UFA. You'd think that people would learn, given how common these contracts are. But no, a brutal anchor of a contract it is.

This is a bloody good deal for a defenseman who outscored everyone from some teams in the league last year.

The question is how much longer are they a contender?
