Oh poor Oilers. They got to watch their team run the best super team in league history including the best player of all time and win multiple cups and then end up with possibly the best player of the modern era after three straight first overall picks before him. A 3 year event that forced the league to change the draft lottery rules.

My heart simply breaks for them. Other teams have been waiting decades for their first cup or first cup in decades with rotten luck at the draft and I'm supposed to think it's "unfortunate" that Edmonton has only managed to be a back to back conference winner? Lol. Lmao even.

They got lucky with McDavid. Their 4th 1st overall pick in 6 years. League had to change the rules because of it. So on top of getting a generational player, they have the advantage of 1st overall picks no other team can.
Um, no. It was exactly the other way round. The league changed the rules, and that's how the Oilers got McDavid. There was another change later on, but Edmonton never would have gotten McDavid if the rules just had stayed like they were before.

Also I'm not sure it's all that great of luck to get 1st overall picks in years that are by far the weakest in terms of top-end talent. They didn't get much out of getting to draft Hall, Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov. And it's not because they made the wrong choice either, they took the favourite to go 1st overall, and the players drafted directly afterwards weren't really any better either.

Not everyone can be so lucky as to get Malkin 2nd overall and then have Crosby fall into their lap. Or get Bäckström 4th overall and Ovechkin 1st. The Oilers finally did get that luck when they drafted Draisaitl 3rd and McDavid 1st. It's kind of ridiculous to blame a team for not getting better when the draft offers little talent, while praising others for having talent like Crosby or Ovechkin fall into their lap. Of course it is easier to get better when the drafts gifts you such caliber than it is when you get mediocre to bad 1st overalls.

Yea they had good chance in 2024 but couldn't seal the deal after the comeback.

Last year they already looked toast. Panthers outplayed them. Lucky it went six.

Last year's Oilers were the best playoff team in decades. It's just the Panther's team was even better. I would not be surprised if the Panthers made the finals again next season.

Honestly best chance for them was the last two years.

Now they will get smoked in the West playing the Golden Knights or Colorado.
No Oilers fan are afraid of the Knights.

Avs? Yes. Stars? Yes. Duck and Mammoth next. Those young teams are going to make noise.

Name a Canadian franchise with more success in that span?

This notion that winning a conference and losing in finals means you suck is crazy to me.

2 finals in last 3 seasons and always making playoffs is not trash.
