Hate to break it to you, but I doubt we take advantage of that cap space. We still have to re-sign Scuderi, so he'll probably take that 3.5. Difference is, we can re-sign Scuderi now because of this trade

ummm you planing to spend 6.9 on him ? your forgetting hes already signed to 3.4 None of this money will be spent on him. Im expecting dl to pick up a ufa defenseman and a winger upgrade with the cash and what room we still have under the cap. If anything its money for salva and the other rfas.

I think he will prove to be worth more than a 4th, however he was not gettng played so we may as well get something for him.

The Kings have done rather well with 4th round selections under Dean Lombardi:

2007: Alec Martinez (95th) and Dwight King (109th)
2009: J.F. Berube (95th) and Linden Vey (96th)
2011: Michael Mersch (110th)
2012: Nikolay Prokhorkin (121st)

The Kings now have the following picks in 2013:

Second Round: 1
Third Round: 1
Fourth Round: 3 (LA, CAR, PHX)
Fifth Round: 1
Sixth Round: 1
Seventh Round: 2 (LA, DAL)

Nine picks overall. Not bad.

We should really expect nothing. Check the upcoming UFA forwards out there and see how many fit into our team. Nearly all the ones who do play for teams fighting us for a playoff spot. Prospal may be a good fit but he has an NMC.

Then we have A-Mart coming back, and when we make the playoffs Greene will too. Maybe we'll get another defenseman but I'm pretty comfortable with Ellerby.

It's hard for the team to make deals because as things stand right now, next season's (and once Brown is signed long-term again, all in the future) cap situation will be cutting it close.

Not too thrilled about this. He's healthy and, in my opinion, brings more to the table than Penner. Will trust Sutter's judgement though.

I know I'm in the minority but I like Penner on this team, a lot more than Gagne especially come playoff time when the games get way more physical. I'm not saying this because he scored last night, but he's been looking really good for the past 4-5 games or so. I just think he can bring more to the table than gagne has shown.

With that said, I'm not happy with this trade unless DL needs the cap room for something this year. We already seen the injury side of things on the D, and up until now the Kings have been fortunate to stay relatively healthy up front. If anyone goes down Gagne could fill in on any line, I don't think Richardson can bring that at the same level Gagne could.

Our system has gotten pretty thin. It doesn't surprise me that Lombardi wants to reload and isn't this draft supposed to be very deep? Or is that the next one?

it's not money for anyone. Gagne was a UFA after the season so he wasn't counting towards the cap next year. That money was free for Slava, et al. regardless of if we traded Gagne or not.

This is big. We need to restock a bit, plus we are without a 1st again, so that hurts. Hopefully Philly makes the playoffs and we get a 3rd.

Telos,

Did you watch the load that is Penner last night. He is getting in better shape and you can see him finishing his shifts much better. Most goals scored in the NHL are when the defensive team is at the later end of shifts. If you watch Penner he is much stronger now then before on his last 10 to 15 seconds of his shifts.

I think any moves to be made on the defense depends on greene. He was suposed to be out 6 -8 weeks and this was from the end of jan which puts it in late to end of march. Now if hes going to be back then i dont see any moves for the defense. However i belive i read that dean stated that hes opporating with the assumption that they are out for the year and if he comes back all the better. Now if dean thinks we need it there is always the buyout option for anyone we pick up. We can do 2 so its possible we dont worry about the cap next year as much .

Personally i see a upgrade to the wings more then anything I would love to see iggy here. what we give im not sure. Without gagne now theres more then enuff room to get him earlier then the deadline. Im not so worryed about brown resigning i belive mitchell and greene come off at the same time. there will be money left over.

Penner played his best game last night. You could just see it on his face how much better he felt once he got that goal. He was also moving pretty fast instead of just picking flowers like he used to do.

Its money we can spend this year at the deadline. As long as we spend it on ufa we can improve our team Also with 2 buyout option we may spend it on rental players.

One good game isn't going to redeem him in my eyes. Gagne contributes exponentially more in fewer games, and wasn't given much time to really show up for us. He was also nearly ppg playing depth for the Lightning in the playoffs prior to us acquiring him. Penner showed up a bit in the playoffs for us, but his overall performance pales in comparison to Gagne's in recent history. Even in his regressed state...

In my opinion, for the Kings, Gagne is a .5 ppg player and Penner is a .3 ppg player if they play out a season for us. In a likeliness, we'll be shipping him out or acquiring a replacement by the deadline for him. He isn't going to be a regular, he'll be a healthy scratch again before we know it.

Personally not having a first really does not hurt us. We have Doughty, Quick, Kopitar, and Carter all with long contracts. They are the core of the team. You have a salary cap so you can only have a handful of big contracts. Taking the fact that the pick in the 1st will probably be about 15 not that big a deal. Now if we keep trading 1st down the road that might be a different story.
