Value of: Simon Edvinsson’s next contract

I saw "Value of: Simon Edvinsson..." and prepared for a shitshow. Glad to see a more reasonable proposition.

I am guessing he will sign a bridge deal, 2 or 3 years, at current 2nd pair/#3D money.

There is no way if I'm Edvinsson's agent that I let him take anything lower than what Power signed for. Any offensive edge Owen has is made up 10x on the defensive side.

But that’s current, no? We’re talking about in a year from now with the cap 7M higher
He can sign this summer.

The Athletic has his player card Market Value at 6.4M

Didn't The Athletic's player card publication spend much of last season indicating that Mo Seider was less valuable than Jeff Petry?

He can sign this summer.

Right. But this summer's contracts will be signed under the knowledge of a $95.5M cap.

Presumably, The Athletic is valuing them based on an $88M cap.

If he signs in July, this is probably close.

Crazy thing is, he could sign a two year bridge, and if he continues on this trajectory could turn around in the summer of 2028 and probably ask for $12.5M+.
Which is why you lock him up for 8 years rn. Can easily justify a skosh under Seider’s contract.

From the organization's standpoint, absolutely.

But the player may opt to bet on himself. Ed as a top pairing D in 2028 gets way more money. $12.5M was honestly a nice suggestion. Take a look at Rasmus Dahlin signing his third contract at $11M/year under the $83.5M cap. That inflates to $15.7M/year under a $119M cap.

(Before somebody cries that's not a comparison, just showing how much space there is between Dahlin's inflation and a $12.5M suggestion)

A year away but might as well start thinking about it. Seider makes 8.55M for reference.
It’s gonna be right there with the rest of them.

He’s got some special in him. To play 20+ minutes a night at 21, completely unprotected vs elite competition? It’s rare. He’s not only not protected any, he has a rookie partner, he’s protecting some. You see the nice offense coming too.

They’re going to be very frustrating to play against in another year or two, after he and Seider mature a little more.. We already see it.

It’s the number 1 reason Detroit has made this crazy turnaround. The big switch was giving him his own pairing, which for whatever reason Lalonde refused to do. One of the reasons he was fired btw… that’s a whole different story though. It just made no sense. Especially after the final 18 games last year when he proved he could handle it.

Once Detroit made that move in McLellan’s 2nd game, that meant either Seider or Edvinsson was going to be on the ice 45-50 minutes every game. Leaving only 10-15 minutes when one isn’t out there. Once they get a solid 3rd pairing, and settle on the types of partners who fit best with both of them, they’re gonna be really tough to matchup against. They already are in many ways.

I think with Raymond and Seider not doing bridges, I would think Edvinsson would take a long-term deal as well. It makes sense and he gets to be a part of the Cup Window that will open up, while still allowing for a lot of roster flexibility with the growing cap. 8x7 minimum...probably closer to 8-8.5

Something in the 7mil range long term seems right. He’s a top end 5on5 guy right now, but the fact that he won’t/can’t play PP will bring the ceiling down

It wouldn’t be surprising but 8.5-9m with full term is a win for both sides IMO.
Seems like it’s easily enough for him to be at 8.5M with Seider at 8.55M

This is just sad, he could easily play PP. Won’t/can’t? Silly season.

Typically, dmen that spend a lot of time on the PP in the NHL were primary PP options on all/most of their development teams. Ed has played secondary or spot roles in GR and with the jr national team, but hasn’t really ever been a staple at Lower levels.

Maybe he can pull top end PP qb out of his ass. He’s physically talented enough. I just wouldn’t put money on it

Yeah he would need to beat out seider now and seider and ASP in the future.

Seider and ASP could be both on the same Powerplay tbh. That’s what I would do.

If we sign him this year there’s no way he makes over what Seider makes. It’s just not going to happen, the team has set that precedent with Larkin and it’s now set with Seider too. The guys aren’t going to want to push for more than their friends/leaders of the team. I bet he gets 7.5-8 x 8 this off season.
