Line Combos: Simmonds Appreciation

It's crazy to see how skilled Simmonds is as a fighter. Not only is he tough but he has amazing technique. Those blocks from the left hand of Benn. He is really good at not getting hit and using his reach/strength to put opponent in a BAD position. I haven't seen a technical fighter on the team like this since Colton Orr or Frazer McLaren.
Loved the Bluebombers. Say what you will about Burkey, but I loved how he always had a spot in the lineup for those guys

I think we have to always have a spot for a guy like that in Toronto. We can't be getting pushed around when we always have a target on our back by every other team in the NHL.

The first time I've heard of Orr or McLaren being referred to as technical fighters. Orr in particular would always leave himself wide open trying to knock his opponent out.

Are you serious? Orr was amazing at locking up his opponents and switching hands. Look at this fights vs John Scott and Lucic.

Also, McLaren was great at using his reach.

Simmonds has different technique but all 3 are clearly well trained in the art of fighting. Not just stand and trade guys like Ryan Hollweg or PJ Stock.

Lol. 'Stand and trade' is exactly how Orr would approach most fights throughout his playing career. Dude was all offence and zero defence; he'd leave himself wide open looking for the KO punch, which in turn is why he himself would get KO'd by the likes of Shelley, Engelland, etc.

Chris Neil and Darren Langdon are excellent examples of technical fighters. Orr is not.

Hollweg and Stock? One of those things is not like the other...

Watch some colton Orr fights and see how he uses his grip and reach to avoid being hit. It looks like hes trading but hes hitting them and they are missing him.

If anybody wants to see a fight review I made of the simmonds been battle , check it out

I was waiting to see THIS screenshot, great video anyways

Simmons is quickly becoming one of my favourites for sure, 100% exactly what this team needed and playing near his prime. You can tell he used the extended time off to heal up and get in great shape, amazing 1st day free agent signing because can you imagine if he signed with the habs? Barf

I think Simmonds/Spezza/Thornton signings show Dubas' development.

A few years ago Leafs were all about speed and skill. Now I think he's learned there's that extra bit needed that sometimes you just can't compensate for. I'm not talking about Brian Burke style 'truculence'. But just something older statesmen give you.

Leafs and Dubas are starting to reap the rewards of that development.

I don't think Dubas was ever opposed to those intangibles. I think his theory was more that the speedy & skilled talents are harder to get, so focus on getting that first and then adding the complementary pieces around it. But that's just my guess / hypothesis.

On the bad side, the RFA contracts for speed & skill were a bit steep, and then the pandemic affected cap planning. But Dubas was able to pull it off to some extent. Hope we can at least win the North Division this year.

Looks like Benn's nose should be broken.

Really curious as to where Simmonds settles into the lineup come playoff time.

If Simmonds truly is gonna turn out to be a top 6 Power forward Type of player for us (which I love)......we need to find another Wayne Simmonds type for the bottom 6. To balance out our roster going into the playoffs.

We need to find a Coleman/Gooodrow type of Acquisition for us by the Deadline

Agreed. Sam Bennett may be that guy, Goodrow is definitely someone we should target in free agency. Both Bennett & Goodrow are GTA boys.

Next season, roll a third line of:

Goodrow - Bennett - Simmonds

Forget Free Agency. I'm thinking playoffs for this year. We can't afford to waste any more years. We have way too much talent on this team to not make it to the 2nd rd at least.

And yes I agree, Bennett would be that type of player for us. If Not Bennett, than maybe JT Miller from the Canucks?

I'm trying to think of more players who might fit the bill. Whart about Miles Wood?

My only concerns is injury and the fact both Simmonds and Hyman are on 1 year contracts. We are clearly thriving with this grittier style and to be honest our goaltending hasn't been saving us at all. We have to assume one of Hyman or Simmonds could be gone or worse injured by playoffs. Dubas needs to subtly look for one more power forward by TD. The odds are someone will over offer Hyman and Simmonds will need help in the playoffs and beyond. The amount of toughness and grit plus room that Simmonds and Bogo give us is hard to measure but it was easily worth $2.5 Million.

Sign this man to a long term extension !

Assuming Wayne keeps on performing (at least) as he has up to this point, it would be amazing to retain his services.
However, i´m not sure that we will be able to land another contract with him for (roughly) the same AAV as this one. Most likely, Wayne will want a higher paycheck for his next contract and we are not exactly overflowing with cap space.
Time will tell, i guess.

I would love Miles Wood, Brownie would be fun to bring back if Ottawa would retain. Bennett an option from Canadien teams, Leivo too. Motte, Pearson and Virtanen would all be interesting.

Thornton-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Hyman
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Virtanen
Robertson-Spezza-Simmonds

I might offer him 2 years depending on the cost. You won't be protecting him though. If you give him 2 years Seattle is less likely to want him.

I honestly thought he washed up before the season started but it looks like he is healthy again.
Lets not get carried away. He is still a bottom 6 player but an effective one.

Not sure what he will want to sign another contract. The Leafs just can't afford much more than his current salary if he wants to return.
