Apropos NHL players participation, insurance and what is the actual risk of long-time injuries: remind me of cases that have really caused an injury that long-time impacted their career

OELs hand injury last year probably messed shit up for him this season.

Radek Martinek! Probably had one more year or two left in NHL. Played without a contract. Some Latvian player did a dirty hit in him and he was pretty much done. Probably cost him a couple million in earnings and a year or two in NHL.

I never question when a guy doesn't want to play because of no contract. For us.. kaut is playing without one. Kempny has in the past too!

OK, but OEL and Martinek were players over 30 and might be questionable if/or their career was going downhill anyways.

Remind me of cases regarding NHLers under 29-30y old ?

Tyson Barrie had his leg sliced goofing around with his team mates in their hotel and missed the rest of the tournament one year. He was scoring a shit ton too and was bound to have a big tournament, we were adding Parayko too.

missed the rest of the tournament goofing around with his teammates - perhaps interesting to know

- but not on the topic :)

IIHF pays all or most part of the NHL players insurances regarding their actually signed contracts, if I'm not mistaken.

The big question is - has it ever happened that an NHL player, under 30y, suffered a long-time injury playing in the IIHF World Championships and has actually lost money because he participated and insurance did not cover that.

I'm getting the impression that every answer won't work for you.

Are you waiting for a 24 year old Sidney Crosby played without a contract and never played again after a hit from behind?

Most NHL players aren't crazy enough to play without a contract. I'm willing to bet no high end mid 20s top 50 NHL scorer/top 10 goalie has ever played at the Skodas.

Same thing.. no NHL player making 5million or more would show up without insurance. Doubt it's ever happened tbh.

I get you are pissed about EP and dahlin and don't blame you! First time I've heard that scenario. Maybe it becomes more common in the future. Might also be the reason the skodas are looking very stripped down this time!

Nope, not pissed about that EP thing. I think that EP is overrated, but that is not the topic here.

Czechboy, IIHF covers an insurance for NHL players up to an amount that usually covers their insurance fee and the national hockey federations pay some extras for the superstars, if necessary.

What you don't understand is that EP, his agent probably, is starting a whole new era regarding insurance to participate for the two weeks of IIHF WC: insurance needs to be paid not only for the current contract but also for his future years, imaginary future contract needs to be insured as well ...

My fear is that this becomes the norm! I get the argument but so many good players coming off an ELC will never play here again. I do still wonder if this is happening behind the scenes. Eg. Who is the highest paid confined player this year? Are there many guys making 5mil a year or more? Eg. Swedes have about 100 players and I'm sure many make more than that.. any coming? Laine is coming and that might be it.

Czechboy, I'd quote myself on this:
(European) players should consider not listening to their agents, and think about the fact that they actually owe something to their country's hockey federation for having the possibility to become a NHL-star and that the chance of a career-stopping injury happening during the WHC is probably less than taking the risk of driving and flying during an ordinary week in the NHL.

I think once Joe Nieuwendyk broke his leg in his first game landed off the airplane

Then I think Erik staal was hit by Swedish player on a dirty hit. took a while to recuperate in the off season. Not sure if anything was broken

Yep - but looking for more than one season impacting injury

Yep, I remember that Eric Staal case.
It was Edler, dirty SWE hit:

Eric Staal had surgery after that dirty Edler hit, but he did not miss more than half of the next NHL season I think (?)

Are there any cases that an NHL player has missed more than one season due to an injury he got participating in IIHF WCH?

Tavares went home early once too.. 2019 I think

I agree but that's not reality. In theory your Sweden should have a full NHL roster every single year.

You are looking for a very specific answer. Let me help you out:

No NHL superstar in the prime of their career has gone to the skodas and missed a full season.

Also relevant... Not many prime nhlers come to the skodas at all!

And if you're not upset about EP than the timing of this thread a day after he's not going is really interesting!

Malkin breaking Haula's jaw is perhaps the worst I remember (2014 GWG):

Czechboy, I'm Estonian and a fan of our Northern Estonian hockey team also known as Winland.

EP is overrated and his (agent's) idiotic claims to be insured into the future needs to be discussed and assessed.
