Carl Gunnarsson brings more to the table and he's getting paid $1.325M. 2 yrs/$2.4-2.6M.

I hope you realize that Gunnar is in for a big raise. He played top pairing minutes and performed well from a defensive perspective. Gunnar's current contract doesn't somehow set precedent for Franson's contract.

The Leafs should stop overpaying bottom line talent. Other teams pay for stars; the Leafs distribute money across overpaid mediocore talent.

If Franson costs near or above 2 Million; let him walk.

4.5m over 3 years is as high as I would go.
This.

Depending on Gardiner's injury, Franson might be a good guy to keep around for at least one year though. I would offer him 2 years at $1.6M/year on a two-way contract (virtually the same he's made over the past 5 years).

Franson is a classic example of Leafs management not showing patience and respect for young players with a high ceiling and focusing on stop gap garbage that don't do anything.

Franson may not be great right now, but looking at who's on this team both from an AHL and NHL level, its mindblowing to think that management doesnt care more about keeping him.

What makes you think they don't care about keeping him?

This!

Benching the guy over Komi was a HUGE error. I hope it comes back to bite this team in the ass for years to come.

I also think that its probably Franson himself holding up the negotiations. I think he wants out of this organizaiton. He's probably quietly asked for a trade - and Burke is fielding offers/packages that might include him.

Franson was a bottom pairing defenceman on one of the worst defensive teams in the league last year. He played against the easiest competition out of anyone on the team, played the 2nd least amount of minutes out of any D (going by TOI/G, not total TOI), and didn't put up that many points.

He's not worth much to be honest. He has size, but rarely uses it. He has a good shot. Thats pretty much it. Not much hockey sense, not the best skater, not great at positioning. He shouldn't get an inflated contract due to "potential" because he's not particularly young anymore.

I'd say he's only worth ~1 million/ year. That's my honest assessment. If he wants more, he should sign a 1 year deal and try and prove himself.

Since Franson had signed in Sweden for the full year can Burke even re-sign him for this upcoming season?

He has an out clause for the NHL if he receives an NHL contract.

As for what he gets 1.4 1 year or so give him a chance to prove himself.

I always thought Franson was under rated. I remember watching last year when they would put him on the power play the odd time and I swear he could hit the net way more often than Phaneuf. I don't know if stats actually correlate this, but it definitely seemed like he hit the net more to me.

22 games

3 goals, 3 assists, -5 in sweden.

2nd in pts among d

Its probably true considering Phaneuf hits the net, what, like 20% of the time?

im in the group that feels he isnt comming back .... and will turn out into a solid player for another team. For some reason i have always been a fan of him (followed nashville when they drafted kevin klein to see how he progressed- which by the way with suter gone i see him having a 40pt breakout year, and i always liked franson there) he has always flew under the radar a bit and it puzzled me how sparsly wilson used him, the guy has a cannon of a shot and it actually hits the net 95% of the time unlike phaneuf, and while he doesnt look for contact he has the frame an offensive dman could only dream of having.

imo we didnt give him a fair crack and would be a consistant 30pt pp2 threat, wish him the best of luck if you dont resign him the only reason i see him expendable because paul ranger is a STUD (imo will be a hell of a top 4 dman for us) and brings more tools than franson does to the table. #1 prioirty on the blueline isnt franson or rielly (yet) its signing ranger and getting him on this team to start the season along with loungo lol

2.5 over 3 years maybe.

I really like Franson and hope he'll slide into the top 4 on the right side now behind Phanuef and in front of Komisarek/Holzer but He's worth a million per tops, maybe 1.5 and that's being generous in the new cba. the cap drops several million dollars next season cap space is crucial and 2.5 for Franson would be a waste.

Why wouldn't it? Last year was the first year of Gunnarsson's two year deal. It's not like the contract was signed ages ago (summer 2011).

You don't pay Franson based on what Gunnarsson MAY make in the future. Gunnarsson deserves a raise because of his steady play after signing that contract. What exactly has Franson done to deserve more than what Gunnarsson got in 2011?

He fits within the team's salary structure as a 5th-6th defenceman. I would be very surprised if Franson signs for more than $1.5M a year.

Yours truly predicted Schenn's contract based on contracts previously signed by Orpik and M. Staal. As long as the contracts are somewhat recent their agents will negotiate off of similar deals.

If Gunnarsson's deal doesn't set a precedent, find me a better example.
