Sidney Crosby hasn't won an Art Ross trophy after his age 26 season. Neither has McDavid. Will McDavid win more still?

Both McDavid & Crosby won their last Ross at age 26. Will McDavid win another Art Ross?

Unless he retires after his age 30 season, I think he wins at least two more. I voted for three. Players who achieve a lot of marks with the moniker “only Gretzky and Lemieux have more or are higher” don’t become complete non-factors in scoring races past the age of 29 like Crosby.
What players are you referring to?

You suggested Crosby became a complete non-factor in scoring races past 29, other players did not. This can't be McDavid since he hasn't gotten to 29 yet.

I’m making an educated guess that a player such as McDavid, who often accomplishes scoring feats that only Gretzky or Lemieux have surpassed, will not be a complete non-factor in scoring races like Crosby, who bowed out the moment he turned 30.

I suppose I am also suggesting that Kucherov winning one at age 30 and competing for another at age 31, unlike Crosby, also makes me believe that McDavid himself will do just fine.

Kucherov fits that moniker in some ways too, like how he’s the only player other than Gretzky and Lemieux to lead the playoffs in back to back playoff runs with 30+ points and also joined McDavid with as just the fifth player to put up 100 assists in a season.

Crosby did become a complete non-factor in scoring races past the age of 29. We can’t pretend that’s not true, no matter how much it stings.

i dunno what happens in the future but alls i know since 2015 is

I don't disagree....McDavid probably wins some more, I voted 2, but who knows. As I suggested, there doesn't seem to be an obvious up and comer that will take over like McDavid did when Crosby was hitting that age. McDavid's competition for the Art Ross lately has been guys older than him.

I couldn't care less about whether Crosby was a factor or not in scoring races past 29....doesn't sting me at all. I'm not a Crosby fanboy...well....I try not be a fanboy of anyone really as I've gotten older. That said, Crosby has done fine in his 30s.....I don't have immediate data, but I'd guess he's pretty high on the production list for guys in their 30s and I'd guess McDavid will produce more in his 30s than Crosby has or will by the time he's done.

Crosby has been quite good and has done well in not falling off a cliff. For me, him being blown away in every scoring race by the time he turned 30 wasn’t unexpected, but just another reason that shows he never reached the heights of the Big Four like McDavid is mostly doing.

I just think the odds are pretty good because I’m not seeing the oddities in McDavid’s age 27 and age 28 seasons like I did with Crosby.

The guy is gunning for a 9th season in a row of finishing no lower than 3rd in scoring and 2nd in PPG, with nearly all of his raw and per game totals being 1 and 2, while playing nearly all the games, healthy or not. He’s not invincible like Gretzky clearly, but he’s probably as close to a safe bet as one can be in today’s game.

From the 2017/18 season until now (all seasons since he turned 30), Crosby is 9th in league scoring. That’s still really damn good and a huge feat for McDavid to live up to.

I don’t expect McDavid to have a huge falloff and I think it’s way too early to say he’s done winning Art Ross trophies, but maintaining that level of elite consistency as you get older is quite impressive. Your body begins to break down, you lose some speed, some quickness, and have to adapt your game. Hardly a guarantee from any player, even Connor.

I think he probably will, but with the competition very strong right now, I don’t think he’s as big of a favourite as he looked to be after 22-23. One thing to consider though is that his top competition now (Kucherov, MacKinnon and Draisaitl) are all slightly older than him. And there’s no one on the horizon who looks poised to enter that competition unless Bedard makes a huge leap. So while we can talk about whether he falls off a bit in the next few years, I doubt he does more than those other guys. And I’d still imagine a 30-32 year old McDavid could beat a prime Jack Hughes or whoever.

At a certain point winning the Art Ross without winning a cup becomes a stain on your legacy. Nobody wants to be that guy who tries hard in the regular season but loses in the playoffs.

Guy won a Conn Smythe. How is that not trying hard in the postseason?

It’s fun to go back and forth, but it’s inevitable. The vultures are crowing for a Cup, but the second they win, the goal posts will get moved to “well, it’s only one” and so on.

True, and 9th in total points is pretty damn good. I’m talking more about competing in individual scoring races though.

The season to season finishes are not quite there for Crosby when he exited his 20s. A distant 5th and a pair of 10ths are his highest finishes since McDavid told him to get lost by the end of 2016-2017.

And that’s fine for players who don’t really seem to have any “only Gretzky and Lemieux has more” or “since those two” labels attached to their individual achievements.

Both Gretzky and Lemieux won a pair of scoring titles in their 30s. Gretzky also had finishes of 3, 3 (tie), 4.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see McDavid join them there too. Hell, the way Kucherov has been playing, maybe he’ll scoop up two as well.
