They give gold medal for this crap

Does that mean two of the losers get medals too
Got me thinking of when Sovjet reported some event when just USA vs Sovjet competed, the newspaper
reported that Sovjet got an honerble 2nd place and USA came next to last.

"This just in..........Sidney Crosby has announced his retirement from the NHL, and will pursue a franchise contract with The Walt Disney Company's Marvel Cinematic Universe for a 6-movie deal as 'Captain Canada'.........." 🎦

Pretty meaningless trivia. It is just due to timing of when the NHL allowed best on bests, playing for Canada, and the fact that Crosby is a lot closer to the end than the start.

Neither should weight very heavily. McDavid was MIA that game until the goal
Well, it's not like people really are about that once some time has passed.

Crosby was way below his usual level in 2010 and not particularly visible in the important games either. Then he scored the decisive goal to win gold, and over time the reception went from "that wasn't pretty and he didn't look like himself at all, but he was there when it mattered most" to quite a bit of "he was so amazing and clutch".

Same with 2014. Yes, he did score in the finals, but he only had 3 points in six games, and half of those games were against Norway, Austria and Latvia. He wasn't the force he should have been. But Canada won gold again.

As amazing as Crosby has been - and he most definately has been amazing, one of the best players to ever play the game - his performances in Olympic games have been somewhat lackluster. Contrary to those in the 2016 World Cup and World Championships. But Crosby at least got the chance to regularly play in such tournaments, unlike some other greats who were not fortunate enough for the NHL to value international competition. It's kind of hard to win something when you are not allowed to participate.

Judging players by team-performances is a rather useless concept to begin with. Especially when it comes to players playing for dominant nations like Canada. It's all about the timing and NHL-participation in tournaments, which has been all over the place.

Just like you can win the Stanley Cup (even multiple times) without being good in the playoffs or even playing much of a role to begin with, you can also win gold medals without doing great. Tom Kühnhackl has two Stanley Cups compared to Leon Draisaitls zero. And it says absolutely nothing about the playoff performances of either. One was never much more than a fourth-liner, the other is the third fastest player to 100 playoff-points in NHL-history.
