I don't want to see us just throwing in the towel and creating holes we have to fill by plundering GR at this point.
Agreed. And while I understand that a successful rebuild ultimately rests on how you draft, sooner or later Yzerman has to start moving things forward, while also being accountable for his own mistakes in free agency. It's dishonest to go another year of, "Golly gee, we were so close but it's a bummer that we missed the playoffs once more...hang in there fam" (when part of the reason they missed the playoffs is that he signed such lousy plugs while waiting for the kids to be ready).

He dealt Maatta and Walman for cap space that he didn't use. This year he dealt Husso for cap space. With a moderate upgrade or two this roster can and should make the playoffs this year, so stop acting like 2030 draft picks will make up part of the core and throw your actual players a bone here.

I mean, if I'm Larkin and yet another deadline passes without being a buyer, I'm starting to question whether I'll see enough winning before I retire to make all the losing worth it.

i don't have an issue not bringing in a lot of help at the deadline but, as I've said, it means we need to make some moves this summer.

I also don't think those other moves were made solely for cap space. I think freeing up playing time and rotation spots were big drivers behind the Maatta and Husso moves, and Walman was mostly moved because of issues in the locker room and maybe with coaches.

The only signings I'm really disappointed by are Tank, Holl, and Lalonde.

I mean they should have made moves last year... Standing pat now is just the team MO.

And, I don't think they make a move in the summer either, or if they do, it's almost for sure going to be the wrong signing based off how they've operated in past summers. Red Wings management actual strengths are trades/drafting not signing UFA's on long-term deals. Basically, ever year they've had more "bad" signings vs ones that are good.

Never forget ever, Zadina got a 3-year extension for next to no reason. That's a little insight to the pro-scouting group we have around here.

It's not too early, it's the reality of the situation. Too many road games, and too many tough teams left.

So you haven’t been watching the team the last 2 months?

I have faith this team can make it. But they need to put it together in the next 6 games to create separation.

Carolina
Utah
@ Washington
@ ottawa
Buffalo
@ Carolina

I see a doable 7 out of 12 points here and the wings are still in it. 8+ of 12 and their chances of getting in are almost solid.

The next 2 weeks are tough.

Vegas
@ Washington
@ Vegas
@ Utah
@ Colorado (2nd of a back to back)
Ottawa
Boston

They need to get 8+ points this stretch, and I think that’s also doable. If they get 15 points of 26 here the team is at 81 points in 73 games.

12 points in the last 9 games in April should secure a spot. THIS will be the true test.

@ St Louis
Carolina
Florida
@ Montreal
@ Florida
@ Tampa
Dallas
@ New Jersey
@ Toronto (2nd night of b2b. Ugh.)

What will improve this team’s chances is getting a couple of reinforcements and Holl out of the lineup. If Yzerman doesn’t do that then my faith might be shaken. Spending a 2nd and 3rd on roster improvements this year to make the playoffs this year is far more important than getting the next Theodor Niederbach or Emil Viro.

I haven't looked ahead at the schedule in a long time , that looks brutal

Always said this team wouldn't be in the playoffs for a long time and likely finish 7-10th pick cause I didn't believe our defense would be good enough with 2 rookies who would no doubt make mistakes and holl gus Chiarot

I was wrong, the 2 rookies +kasper+edvinsson helped turn the season but if we're gonna get in even if it's not huge players yzerman needs to fix that 3rd d pairing and we need someone who can help with the penalty killing cause we're brutal in that department

I don't care if he calls up danielson and who he gets on d but something needs to be done. Move Tarasenko now if we can before we have to buy him out in the off season or attach a pick. Hes not working out here

I'd be disappointed if yzerman didn't at least do something

I've watched every game this year.

I've also watched every game of the last 8 years and they never make the playoffs, so I don't believe this year will be different. This team folds when the games matter at this time of year, and it is happening again.

Your total gives them 93 points on the year, which isn't happening lol. You are being far too optimistic with your point totals. The schedule will simply be too tough for them to make it. I'd be completely shocked if they end with 90 points.

The wings are at 66 points in 60 games. 26 points in the next 22 games is probably enough to get in as the last WC. 9 games at home. 13 on the road.

If the wings get aggressive and get reinforcements will be telling. Last year Yzerman didn’t and it probably cost the team a playoff appearance. He needs to rectify that mistake this year.

He won’t. He will just do nothing. Yzerman is starting to piss me off as a fan, never makes an actual move. And his UFA decisions are garbage. He has drafted pretty well though, but he’s gotta do more than that

If he doesn’t make a trade of any type 2 years in a row I’d be livid. Either trade people and bring up kids or trade picks and bring in help. But you have to do something.

vs carolina

lombardi - larkin - raymond
debrincat - compher - kane
mazur - kasper - berggren
soderblom - rasmussen - shine
veleno - tarasenko

chiarot - seider
edvinsson - johansson
gustafsson - tuomisto
holl

lyon
talbot

I hate this so much.

Playoffs would be nice, and we'll be right there to the end, but this season should be more about identifying weaknesses and what to fix in the off season. If a small deal to upgrade the third pairing can be had, we should go for it. Same if we can find a bottom 6 center that can kill penalties.

Underwhelming off-season is coming back to bite us.

Look at how much more impactful Toffoli has been this year than Tarasenko. Or Chychrun compared to Gustafson.

We should have made more impactful moves and we didn’t.
We didn't have enough cap space.

I never liked the Tarasenko signing. The biggest problem this season was hanging on to Lalonde foe as long as we did.

Until proven otherwise I'm going to revert to history and say Yzerman stands pat.

They're doing better than I predicted which was 79 points. 13pts out from that prediction though with 22 games. They'd have to lose a ridiculous number of games now to make that happen.

Yup never liked tarasenko signing, got ridiculed for saying he was done. Ppl were convinced he'd get 30-40

If we can get a cozens etc.. level type player great. If not call up kids or make a trade to help the 3rd d pair and help our horrible penalty killing

Its gonna sound stupid since we need to win but if we have to for the long run to have better results give larkin the next game off. All I keep hearing about is our how larkin and McDavid are tired out from the 4 nations

I think it sounds stupid and obviously we need him, maybe just cut his ice time next game a bit I don't know. Next game is huge we can lose 3 in a row I dont think we have another 7 game win streak in us

Toffoli’s caphit is only 1.25 more than Tarasenko’s. Maybe Chychrun would have been too expensive. I still think we could have had a more impactful off-season than what we watched unfold.

Two deadline threads.

Anyways, Chychrun was traded to Caps, and I doubt Ottawa was looking to move another guy to Detroit. I was more for Cozens during the stinkers in December, and I would still be ok if they think he is better than he is playing right now. Because right now he sucks, and all you read about is Buffalo fans talking about him like we do Tarasenko. Who is only 6 pts behind Cozens.

I think if you are expecting Cozens to come in and be a dominate two way center if/when he gets here are in for a rude awakening.

Agreed, I still can’t believe they went into the season with the defence group they did. And it’s still a huge weakness even with Edvinsson and Johansson playing well above expectations.

Toffoli got signed until 2028. Not sure I want that. Doesn't fit with prospects coming up.

Could have afforded Chychrun if we didn't sign Gus and Tank. In this scenario, Lalonde might still be the coach though.

There were a few UFA defensemen last summer that I wanted, but at the cap and length they got signed for, I would pass on most of them.

We didn't have the RIGHT space. They could have not signed Tank, not signed Gus, buried Husso earlier, and then overpaid for Matt Roy. Or Skjei. Or Edmundson. Or OEL.

Maybe one or more of those guys didn't want to come to Detroit, even with an overpayment. But it's not like there weren't players that would have been better here than some of the guys they chose to sign or bring back. And once the list of "10 percent chance that happens" gets long enough, the probability becomes reasonably high that SOMETHING could (and should) have been done.

I know Yzerman made the ‘significant roster surgery’ comment, but I don’t believe for a second that moves couldn’t have been made earlier.

Maatta should have been traded at the draft. Holl should have been traded with a 2nd to dump him instead of Walman. If you get rid of Walman, then get rid of him for free or at a gain.

That’s $10 mil right there.

Now don’t sign Tank. Then bury Husso earlier or dump him.

There was money to make better moves. Yzerman is showing he’s a conservative GM instead of one that’s going to be aggressive and assertive. It’s opposite of how he was 2 years ago, and opposite of his Tampa days.

Me too . Waiving Holl will help GR defense. Also we get opening for top four defenseman in Detroit . Jones already gone, but there's others. Tarasenko, not scoring, blocking Berggren to play more with skilled players. We could bring on of Mazur, Danielson or Lombardi , they all could be productive in any lines.
