Should we upgrade at this deadline and where?

So hear me out…

Upgrade on Veleno - 2.275 mil
Upgrade on Burgers - 825k
Upgrade on Tank (will be harder to trade) - 4.75 mil
Upgrade on Holl - 3.4 mil (lol)
Upgrade on Gus - 2.0 mil

If the wings can improve on. 3 of these 5 I think they can do well enough to steal the 3 seed in the Atlantic this year. And I think they can do it in a way that helps the team for the next 3-5 years without selling the farm. It’d cost a lot of picks but this is a bad year and if they do well, Detroit is picking 20th-24th each round. Trade a few picks and no more than 2 B prospects.

Veleno + 2025 NSH 3rd + 2026 3rd for JG Pageau - Pageau has 1 year left at 5mil. Copp will be on IR for a long time and I would expect to see him miss time next year. He’s one of the best 3C’s in the league and is winning 59.8% of his faceoffs this year. It also gives NYI some cap relief to sign Dobson.

Holl + 2025 DET 3rd+ 2026 3rd for Connor Murphy. There’s your low impact 5/6D upgrade with a little bit of physicality. He looks like he’s got enough in the tank to play effectively another 3 or 4 years.

Burgers + Hanas + 2026 DET 2nd for Fabian Zetterlund. This guy is what I *WISH* Burgers could turn into. He’s a premier 3rd liner and can set up to play 2nd line during injuries. He also fits the core’s age range as a 2017 draftee.

I still don’t like Compher at the 2C spot with how bad he’s been this year. But I think we’re stuck with him unless there’s a way we can trade him + extras for Ryan O’Reilly or Brayden Schenn.

Lose a 2nd and 3 3rd round picks. Lose Veleno, Burgers, Hanas and Holl.
Add Murphy, Zetterlund, Pageau.

I would sell but that isn't an option, so... move Tarasanko and bring up someone from GR. Ogee targets to move work for me, but no big dollars to be saved next season. Holl would be a good move, and that saves 2.25 next year. If they pick up a player, just make their deal ends at the end of the season. They will need all the money they can scrounge up to sign Marner.

Give Zetterlund 12min a night and you've turned him into Burgers. Similarly if you give Burgers 2nd line ice time he'd look like a solid 3rd liner like Zetterlund too...
