Should we eliminate the bronze medal game?

Ignorance at its finest (to the players that give up or dont care about bronze). I'd rather go home with a bronze medal around my neck for my days of hard work than with nothing. If you don't have the guts to play for a medal you shouldn't be in the olympics, every medal is special including bronze; if it wasn't you'd see athletes hiding their silver and bronze medals.

Hilariously there yet are people on the Finland Top 3? -thread claiming the 3rd or even 2nd place in ranking for US, without playing for it. :)

Back in 1998 when it was the first time the pros were allowed, some Canadians had that mentality and it was a disgraceful attitude that cost Gretzky his only chance at an Olympic medal. I don't think the current crop of professional athletes think this way. One may have a more uphill battle psychologically, but they would still all try to win the bronze for the country.

I agree. I suspect that all-or-nothing mentality is owned more so by armchair athletes and fair-weather fans than by today's elite athletes. Regardless of their nationality.
 
How would you determine bronze? Go back to the old system where the team with the best points record next to the teams in the gold medal game get the bronze? IDK I like the bronze medal game, some extra hockey.

This was a wonderful post in a thread full of facepalm material. It's crystal clear that winning for bronze almost invariably tastes better than losing for silver, although the silver medal will be much appreciated after the initial disappointment goes away. Even many of the players were gutted in the post-game interviews and were actually embarrassed for not showing up. So much for "not being interested" in the bronze medal.

The only reason this thread exists is that US fans seem to be living in denial about the fact that USA showed up for real for roughly first 10 minutes in the bronze match, only to give completely up after quick 2-0 in the second. It's not that USA didn't want the bronze to begin with - it's all about them being brutally outcoached and outplayed by Finland. Call Disco Dan, or something, but for the love of the game, please stop putting up stupid threads like this.

I guess gold or bust was true after all....

What makes it true? Because the guy who blew two penalty shots and took stupid penalities says it wasn't his best effort?

He's operating under the same assumption that you guys are, that Finland appreciates it more. A guy who fights a cabbie for a quarter should be able to fight a Fin for an olympic medal. Science.
 
As if mere spectators can eliminate a game.

Don't watch it if you don't like it. Go do something else.

Finland lost to their archrival too. That is no excuse not to show up in the last game of the tournament. Did you miss the big smiles on the american faces after the bronze in a tournament as the championship last year?

I just think you're delusional. Human nature only applies to americans. Kane said he wasn't up for it. That's funny cause Oshie scored more in the tournament than Kane and was estatic over a World Championship bronze.. I'm pretty sure he was able to get up for an Olympic one.. uknowhatimsayin?

Sure they were fired up to start. That flamed out rather quickly though.

I think it was easy to see the letdown after it they got behind and realized a comeback would have taken a heroic effort.

Can we not give USA a special medal for being really good?

of course not

what should be changed is team USA - they could've picked a team that wouldn't quit after half of a period. Even better, just send some non-NHLers or at least non-divas next time and then enjoy watching your team fight for a win till the last second.

Perhaps Putin should've shut down the tournament completely after Russia was ousted. That would have spared us all from an ocean of entitlement ... :help:
 
How else are you going to award Bronze?

Keep the game. Feels better to win the Bronze medal game than it does to lose the Gold medal game, at least initially.

The moment it happens, it sure feels better with Bronze than Silver. Afterwards? Silver might've been better!
