Should we consider Quick/Bernier as a long term 1A/1B solution?

Bernier will be traded at the draft, hopefully for a first rounder. We shall then find a Matthieu Garon-esque backup around the same price as Bernier or slightly less.

For now, lets enjoy our remaining games with these two together, and may Bernuer win another Stanley Cup with us before he moves on.

Would I like to have a 1a/1b with Quick/Bernier? Yes.

Could it possibly happen? No.

The Bernier ship has sailed here in LA. We committed a lot of money to Quick for a long time with his last contract extension. He's our guy.

Bernier is going to be a fantastic goalie for some team within the next season or two. It sort of reminds me of Chicago in the mid-90s with Belfour and Hasek. Would they have preferred to keep both? I'm sure, but one had to go, and Hasek went on to have some incredible seasons in Buffalo.

It's sort of the way these things go. Unfortunate, sure, but it's a quality problem to have, and we made our choice with the Quick extension.

As much as I want him to stay, he will most likely be gone next season. I think it is beneficial for his career to sign with another team. His talent and potential is just too high to be a backup behind Quick.

Whoever gets him I hope he will succeed. He's a good goaltender and will be missed.

I can't wait till Bernier is traded and I hope that's on the trade deadline. I mean that in the nicest way possible. He's going to be important next month though.

You don't sign Quick to a 10 yr deal if you want him to be splitting games.

A mite goalie may have been > Luongo last spring, but yeah the second one is a good call. :)

Agreed. My point was that two of the best 'fundamental' goalies of the past ten years were bested by an athletic goalie. And resoundingly bested at that.

We also shouldn't forget what Tim Thomas pulled off in his last couple years in the NHL.

WE either get a nice (not elite) help on Wing and Vet Backup Goalie for the Playoffs ... OR we get a late 1st, or couple 2nds + 3rd (ala - Anders Lindback as mentioned) ... either way
... BUH BYE BERNIER BUH BYE ! :)

and good luck, just not against us in the future :thumbu:

I would say it depends on what you mean as long term. If you mean till the end of this year than sure we do it. But with the trade deadline being April 3rd this year I could see a deadline move with Bernier since we only have 12 games left in the regular season at that point. And only 2 are back to backs.
And I think most of us would agree when it gets playoff time if will be one goalie.
But I think DL is looking to make sure how the realignment will work out so that he gets Bernier to a team we won't face much.
In the end the latest this goes on is the draft.

Fundamentals > athleticism. That's all I'll say.

Maybe. Quick's athleticism will decline as he gets older a lot more than Bernier's fundamentals. That does hint that Bernier will be capable of a longer career, but Bernier's athleticism is not going to improve.

Hoever, look at the difference between Quick's fundamentals when he came into the league to now. As a rookie he had trouble being square to the shooter, struggled with rebound control, and often lacked focus which would altogether lead to goals he should have stopped. All of those have improved dramatically.

Quick's fundamentals have consistently improved and will continue to over the course of his career. The same can't be said for Bernier's athleticism.

Short-term: 1A/1B for sure.
Long-term: Quick. Bernier is traded before the draft.

Completely false. That's all I'll say.

Sorry but I have to ask...have you ever actually played goal? I have for 13+ years now. I still see a lot of holes in Quick's game that have been there from the start that haven't improved. I'm not sure whether to blame that on Quick or Ranford but it's kinda sad they haven't been fixed.

Look...I'm not trying to sit here and bash Quick. I absolutely love him. I would just ALWAYS rather have a fundamentally strong one over one that relies on his athletics. Bernier to me is going to be a star once he's traded. He is so fundamentally strong that he's really going to be a big asset to whatever team lands him.

Bernier is plenty athletic - obviously not Quick athletic but it's there. The thing is it's not his style to be like Quick. He doesn't rely on athleticism. He uses his positioning, angles, and save selection. Have you ever noticed that Quick goes down on every shot and Bernier doesn't? It's because Bernier can read when a shots going high and thus doesn't drop.

And yes, while Quick has gotten better there, he's still the single worst puck handling goalie I've ever seen in the NHL and he still does have holes in his game that are very fixable and would go a long way to making him probably the best goalie in the NHL.

Yes, that is why you're in the NHL and he is not...wait what? This stuff about Quick not having great fundamentals is heavily overblown. His rebound control is much better than JB's, he has a better glove hand, and doesn't sit as deep in his net (which shows great positioning and angles, which you are discrediting). He has also shown the ability to be on point in the face of adversity which JB has not. JB has a hard time staying steady in goal.

The major flaw in Quick's game is his puck handling. He's not the worst in the NHL but he's pretty bad at it.

I don't see star in Bernier, I see a good goaltender, but we have a great one now. So it's nothing against Bernier, but he's gonna have to be the one to go.

Glad to see Bernier step his game up after that disastrous first game he entered into against the Ducks where he couldn't stop a single shot on the PP.

Hopefully he brings his value up and the Kings gain leverage in trade talks as a result. He's well aware that he's auditioning for a job with his performances so that he could catch some clubs attention, and let's hope it works. I think Bernier needs that extra push to stay competitive, which is something he probably wasn't used to in the past.

Remember how he was passed over and became upset when the Kings called up Quick instead of him years ago? Or how he played his way out of a starting role on the Canadian WJC and lost the position to Dubnyk because Bernier had gotten too comfortable and was aware that he was guaranteed a starting role.

Now he seems to be on the right path though in not having some sense of entitlement and he's earning his starts with his play and not his reputation as a former first round pick. He's still young so his time will come once he's dealt, which I anticipate happening at some point during the offseason.

While I respect your opinion having played goalie yourself, that does not mean those who don't play the position are not able to identify "flaws" or "holes" a goalie may or may not have. And while you probably have a great grasp on what to look for in a goalie, I will trust that Quick and Ranford know a bit more than you do when it comes to his "flaws".

If you look no further than the playoffs last year, I find it extremely hard to believe that Bernier would have had the success quick had, and it's due to quick's athletism. There is no way, in my opinion, even with great fundementals that Bernier has, he would have been able to stop the several cross ice one timers point blank that Quick was able to stop.

I like Bernier a lot and hope he does go on to have a successful career. I really do. I just think right now, Quick is hands down going to be the better goalie for the Kings.

Didn't he also lose his starting spot to Steve Mason?
