Should Umberger be bought out in June, 2016?

How is it unrealistic? The Flyers did the exact same thing with Riley Cote. He retired with a year left on his deal and was immediately named assistant coach of the Phantoms. Has been there ever since

I don't want him on the books beyond next season.

Either trade him while retaining half the cap or healthy scratch him all season (LTIR stash might work too if he sees the writing on the wall).

No one will probably take him plus he has an nmc. (who the hell gives umberger an nmc? maybe trade him back to that guy?)

There is no reason to take an unnecessary cap penalty beyond next season for him.

Has there been any developments regarding protecting players with NMC on expiring deals in the expansion draft?

Because if we're forced to protect him, the gain of buying him out isn't just the cap savings next year. It means not having to risk losing one of Laughton/Raffl/Cousins.

Edit - I guess the better wording would be getting to protect one more of those three guys.

I am 90% sure they will not have to be protected... it would not make very much sense at all for players or teams.

Imagine a 2nd pair Dman makes it very well known he is going to test UFA, but has an NMC...his team have to protect him... then he ofc goes undrafted and is a UFA in 10 days. And his team have not only lost him but another 2nd pairing Dman due to this.

It would be absurd.

Cote was making around league minimum & played a role that had him getting punched in the face on a nightly basis. He had way more reasons to retire while still contracted than Umberger does.

Does not buying him out screw us up for a potentially expansion draft. He should be off the books by then right?

Well, the expansion draft is before July 1st, so technically he isn't off the books yet. If a player has a NMC, he is automatically protected, but people seem to think that because his contract is expiring, we won't have to protect him
