Should Rod Brind Amour Be Fired If The Canes Are Eliminated In The ECF?

Should Rod be fired if they lose?

No.

He's done great job. Their roster just isn't nearly good enough to compete.

What should they do to get to the next level, though?

Clearly, their strategy of lobbying every puck they can at the opponent's net gives them about eight wins maximum in a playoff year.

I'm not sure firing Rod alone would get that roster any further in the playoffs (the team might very well do worse), but I honestly don't see them winning a Cup with that core and that system, either.

I feel like the roster is more flawed than the coaching.

Not enough forward depth to win a cup.

It’s not lack of depth that’s the issue IMO; it’s the lack of star power. In any event, I agree that the Canes’ problem is one of roster construction. It’s hard to win a cup with a team that’s very good top-to-bottom but is missing those game-breaking talents. The Blues won with a roster like that, but most cup teams have both superstars and depth.

I don’t think so and he’s made further than 28 other teams. So we can sit here and think are hockey experts criticising the Carolina hurricanes. But do remind yoursel. They made it further than your team.

Rod stays, more roster moves needed to take that next step otherwise they are a pretty strong team.

I actually think the Hurricanes play a “winning style” similar to Florida’s. The difference is that Florida is just far superior playing that style due to personnel on the ice.

So no, he shouldn’t be fired. If you gave Brind’Amour a roster like Florida’s, I think you’d be getting very similar results to what Maurice is getting with the Panthers.

I also think carrying over a lot of the angst from the Canes always getting caved in once they get to the third round is an unfair bias. Yeah, it’s a crazy record. Also didn’t start with Brind’Amour. Actually, wait a minute it did. It was him as a player who scored the GW goal the last time they won an ECF game.

No. But he needs to accept better assistant coaching help. I'm fine with Gleason for now, but Jeff Daniels serves no purpose other than being a yes man. I fully expect this to be addressed.

He also needs to stop looking through the "Rod lense" aka players should play the way he played. It's fine to forcheck but if all you're doing is shooting at the goaltenders chest 40 times then that doesn't accomplish anything. Let them play hockey the way they know how.

Carolina sold off Rantanen for a rookie and futures at the deadline. This roster was "get in and see what happens." I'll argue that getting to the East Finals is a good outcome, no matter how disappointing this series has been.

Guentzel - Aho - Jarvis
Teravainen - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Svechnikov
Drury - Kuznetsov - Noesen

Slavin - Burns
Skjei - Pesce
Orlov - Chatfield

Andersen
Kochetkov

Getting knocked out in the 2nd round with that hurts more.

Rod has taken his team to 4 conf finals in the last 7 years. The leafs haven’t seen a conf final since 2002. Get a grip people if you think he should be fired. Carolina is known to penny pinch. Rod’s teams have overachieved.

It's not very good top to bottom anymore. That hasn't been true this year.

Who is above average for the position / role they play? Anyone?

Try and formulate who their second line is supposed to be, it's a team with three bottom six lines, a weak second pair, and average goaltending.

I would say no. And that he would even have at least two or three more playoffs without getting to a final with a better team than this before he would be considered to get fired.

Build a roster where they don't go into a series where the opposing teams have the 3 best players?

no. they did nothing in the offseason and its coming back to bite them. better owner or gm first.

Absolutely not, maybe they should get a new GM though.

Their roster is honestly pretty bad for a final 4 team.. If it wasn't for Rod, who knows if they would have made the playoffs.

The Canes had a cap bomb last Summer. Necas and Jarvis needed new deals. Jarvis' raise was going to be substantial, if they wanted to go long-term (they did). The two ended up going from under $4 mil combined to nearly $14 mil. That's over 11% of the cap in raises. Pick at what they did in the middle and lower end if you want, but this was always going to be a weaker roster on paper than what they had previously.

No, the roster is mediocre.

Bring in 2 big names in the off season and actually help Rod out.

Otherwise be honest and simply state the Canes strategy is just to wait for a horrendous year from everyone where they can win a cup because that roster will never be good enough unless they can actually keep their guys and/or make big acquisitions via FA.

They have a pretty ugly record in the conference finals. They are 0-15 in their last 15 conference finals games. Rod wasn’t coaching for the first 4 of those games though, but he was a player on that team

Definitely not, seems like he's done a pretty good job IMO.

But the canes have Massive pretenders since 2020 ngl. Lack of high end talent was a huge red flag and anybody with eyes could see that.

They could've been trying to replicate the Vegas strategy so who knows 🤷‍♂️
