Should NHL Player Participate in 2018?

If the World Cup of hockey returns, then I don't think the NHLers should participate in the olympics since that tournament will serve the same purpose and it will be in the summer.

In all seriousness, if I ever have kids, I will tell them about the magic that was the 2010 Olympics. If they were to ask me: "Hey dad, why dont NHLers play in the Olympics any more", the answer would be:

The NHL owners dont want to send players because they dont get any $$. Think of how absurd that will sound in 10 - 15 years

Yes they should. The olympics is the biggest sporting event on the planet, bar none. If you want to spread hockey interest, participate. If you just want to entertain the people who already love the game, make another world cup of hockey.

No. Sending pros is not in the spirit of the games. Watching the other events, you hear about how the athletes formed web sites to raise money to help them get there. I dont like Garth Snow as much as anybody, but he is right, when he says that they will lose money now because J.T. is out. People wont go to see that team play. The other thing the NHL has going for it is the location. Unless there is some South Korean prospect I dont know about in the minors, you wont have someone saying they are going to play in their home town like you had with Ovie this year.

So your one of those people who then wouldnt want to see NBA players in the Olympics, or tennis in the Olympics, or who supports gold and baseball staying out.

Heck, Michael Phelps and Usain bolt probably make as much money as a lot of the guys on the Canadian hockey team. Should they be barred??

This is a joke if you ask mke

If they start having a World Cup, no. Hopefully yes. Again, I don't want both.

99% of Olympic athletes are professionals. Just because they don't participate in glamour sports doesn't make them amateurs. The 'spirit of the games' or whatever is seeing the best in the world compete.

Without a shadow of a doubt they should. It would be a crying shame and embarrassment if they didn't go.

Winter Olympics has and should always be the best tournament for best on best hockey when it comes to international hockey. And I love international hockey.

The World Juniors is the best time to see amateur hockey.

Snow would be doing the same btchn if JT was hurt in a NHL made WC.

A WC tourney might, might put 1m in each owners pocket, if they hold in the perfect place.

How many athletes at the Olympic games are not sponsored?

Snow also complained that Okposo wasn't picked for Team USA.

So he wants his players to represent their country, but moan when they get hurt doing so. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Yes. It's every athletes dream to represent their countries in the Olympics. It's the biggest sporting event in the world and it's not even close. Even if greedy owners dislikes the idea, NHL players WANTS to play there. If a miracle happens and NHL players aren't allowed to play in the Olympics, I hope a Malkin-caliber superstar leaves to the Europe during Olympic years.

Also, I don't think I'm wrong if I said that only USA and Canada cares about World Cup. I hope it never returns.

Snow is a hypocrite, he called out USA Hockey when Okposo didn't make the team. Everything Snow says is a joke.

The soccer pros play in olympic soccer, The basketball pros play in olympic basketball, so what is the issue here?

FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world actually

Yes. Having the world's best players compete on the biggest stage once every 4 years at the cost of shutting the NHL down for a couple weeks is IMO a small price for the NHL to pay.
