OT: Should Doug Armstrong get fired?

Hayes has ALWAYS stunk. He has had like one good year and only produced because he was able to be put up against 2nd/3rd lines due to their teams forward depth.

I don't mind getting him for a 6th, whatever. But flipping him a year later for a 2nd is unacceptable asset management when this team is in the middle of a rebuild.

Draft picks are used to better your team. Have you ever heard of addition via subtraction? That's what we just did with Hayes, we are infinitely better without him. It's a good use of assets. It's not like we needed the cap room, we got rid of him because just his existence is a detriment to the team.

Where have you been, Army does the majority of his shopping in the dumpster. Remember when no one wanted ROR and he was seen as an outright incompetent villain to his team before we stole him? Yeah, we gave up Tage but that's like giving up a 7th for the Cup.

It was clearly a mistake to have dealt for him. Army thought it was low risk move, but it ended up having hidden cost in that we had to pay to make him go away. So pretty crappy all around. And paying asset to move 2 years left during non-contender years is bad look. So Army gets failing Hayes grade all around.

But I would also point out that EVERY gm who isn't afraid of his shadow makes similarly crappy moves. Yzerman paid a 2nd to get rid of Walman who he just extended a year or so ago. Vancouver has paid a couple times to get rid of their mistakes (including this weekend with Mikheyev) and their guy was just finalist for GM of year. Brisebois is hailed for his 2 Cups, but he just dealt Jeannot for far less than he overpaid for him just over a year ago and he also basically took a do-over on dumping McD to keep Sergachev, but the 2 years where they didn't have McD were hige missed opportunity while their window was still open.

And those are among the more highly regarded GM. But we don't judge them by their worst deal or even by their mistakes in general, we judge GMs by whether they can build team into contender and whether once they become contenders they can get team over the top. Army has done that, our record during his tenure is among the league's best, we won our first Cup, and have now begun process of restocking for next window (which will open after Army steps back in favor of Steen). So Army isn't perfect, and they likely won't spotlight the Hayes trade on his HOF plaque, but he is likely to get inducted (Olympic Gold in 26 would be feather in his cap too).

So yeah, this Hayes (and krug) situation sucks, but who among us has never made a mistake? Everyone is praising Conroy and Grier for their great drafts- and they may well become great GMs- but everyone has criticized them both fairly non-stop until this weekend. Time will tell.

Yes he basically was ROR’s replacement. Who else would it be? Schenn was already on the team, so we knew what we had in him. That part didn’t change.

ROR is only making 900K more than what we were paying Hayes. That makes it a huge miss.

Do I believe in this plan? No. We still need elite talent. We don’t have it and it does not seem to be on the way, outside of Thomas. I would say Thomas is currently on the fringe of that, though I am optimistic about him. So if he can acquire that top end talent, I will change my tune and bend the knee as others have. Until that time his is a good GM, nothing more and nothing less.

If getting middle range talent is a sit down and shut up off-season then the bar is in a different place than I would expect. He has had a good offseason. Not sure why we need to blow it out of proportion.

Look at the core of the team. Steen will be doing paint by numbers when he takes over. Yes this includes the putrid D contracts. I can't think of a better position of any GM coming into the league than what DA has set up. Excellent draft utilization - it's obvious that he's had a vision for a while now. The guy is a class act.

You've been consistently somewhat hard lined on this and I don't blame. We need at least one forward (preferably a center) and at least one defenseman to take charge this season. We need to see some separation.

EDIT: I know the cap goes up and all that, but it is vital that DA/Steen get really conservative with their cap space cuz that can certainly be a great way to snag that high-end, 1st-line guy who is at a good age to step in to the roster.

Something else that would be cool to see in the NHL is deferred PP time that cannot be used in the last 5 minutes of the game. Use it or lose it.
