Yea for sure. Despite the brutal ending, he gave his life for the sport and was a staple for kids growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada. Gotta respect the symbol despite the person.

Does any of that deserve hyperbolic vilification? Such as…He said he’s seen women get hit by pucks because they were chatting instead of watching! The horror! Clearly a misogynistic bastard! Off with his head! Whatever. Take your gold medal in the victim Olympics and go fume in the corner over your next perceived slight.

Do you think any of those are acceptable comments to say on the air? Every single one of those contains blatant and unapologetic lack of respect, insults or disdain to anyone with different backgrounds or convictions than his.

We just found the body of more than 1300 first nation children who were taken from their parents, died in neglected conditions, and were tossed in unmarked graves in complete indifference. You think that someone saying to first nations kids to stop complaining and ''Go out and get your own fair shake in life and work for it'' is the kind of character we should celebrate?

And you wanna talk about hyperbole? :
I think he is one of the greatest and one of the most important Canadians to ever live. The man has done more in his long lifetime than politicians, doctors etc.

His quotes are no more extreme than anything you might expect from Ricky Gervais, or Bill Maher or any number of luminaries. I don’t cry for their cancellation.

I will not discuss Residential School issues on a hockey forum. It would be highly inappropriate to have a “drive-by” conversation about a topic like that.

You’re the guy who said that people feeling slighted have thin skin. Because you’re not one of the Cherry targets.

He’s a f***ing racist. You’re defending a racist. I’ll take the “victim Olympic” gold medal over whatever you’re doing.

You consider him to be a racist. Ultimately, I do not. I wouldn’t defend someone I legitimately consider to be racist. Therein lies our disagreement.

Cherry is the type that's racist without blatantly being one...anyone with half a brain cell can tell he's being condescending towards other nations the second he compares Europeans/Russians to Canadians. If you need context, then you should maybe evaluate your own stances.

Please stay away from hard conversations if it makes you uncomfortable.

@Benttheknee, what, does this need context?

Sorry, am I missing something? Which is derogatory? I suppose calling communist pinko is a bit rude. I prefer letting the rude be rude if they want to be. Freedom of speech is kind of important, but people seem to have forgotten this basic fact.

I will defend to the death your right to be wrong. I live by this code because I am principled. I am defending Cherry's right to be rude.

You don’t know what freedom of speech is.

A lot of you think freedom of speech means freedom of consequences when you say something shitty.

Then don’t complain about him not being in the Hall of fame because that rudeness is what rightfully keeps him out.

So far the best argument FOR is that he'd be a better inductee than some of the worst inductees of all time. What a bar to beat...

If something has a cost (like consequences) seem that it stop to be free no ?

Freedom of speech[2] is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction.

One issue is a lot of people over time started to mix-up the part of the freedom of speech that a state protect and a part of the freedom of speech that a state do not protect and could not, specially American sometime they mix-up and compress freedom of speech (a large human principle that is not set in laws) with the first amendment protection.

Has for the question, hall of fame is not just about being famous (or Tie Domi and Probert would be in), but Cherry did so much that it would feel incomplete to have no picture of him and his dog in it so he should be in the actual building for sure like Paul Henderson).

Official nomination and induction, higher bar but yes I think so he should.

There are only legal consequences and social consequences. However, social consequences have been dialed up to 1000 with mass communications. People who have no skin in the game come out of nowhere and destroy people.

My family has been hunted and that was decades ago. My father was innocent, but he got targeted by the gay community and almost lost everything. Other families were not so lucky. a half dozen people were crushed. You too will f*** up and you will be hunted.

Joe Rogan is getting slammed because he used the N-word. Yet, he never used the N-word to attack anybody or any group, he used is in a frame such as, "you should never say the N-word"

If you can't say that word in that context, you are f***ed. That is not racism nor xenophobia and they are grilling him.

This outrage is fake. It is not real. Don Cherry is the same. It is fake outrage, by shallow weak people who have managed to convince people their being weak is a strength.

I feel pretty confident that I won’t say something racist or homophobic in front of people. Doesn’t take much effort to do that.

You want to go use racial slurs at work? Good luck saying freedom of speech as your ass gets rightfully fired.

He literally called a black neighborhood the planet of the apes and you’re here arguing people are too sensitive.

Dude I can't even say that word when I'm alone in my car singing lyrics to a song that was written by someone else.

I guess there are just some folks out there who can say it freely, but I'm not one of 'em. :help:

As for the poll......I'd say yes.

As a builder, it's only a matter of time.

He was obviously not the best player or coach for that matter. But his impact in broadcasting is undeniable.
