Should Don Cherry be in the HHOF?

Cherry coached Boston for 5 seasons and they won 231 games during this span ( a .6575 winning pct. ) and they averaged 105 points a season. The Bruins finished 1st in the Adams Division 4 times and in 2nd place once. The Bruins lost in the SC Final twice and once in the Semi-Finals to Montreal who had arguably one of the best teams in NHL history. You might not him personally but give the guy some credit.

Are you really going to base your overall opinion of Cherry's HOF candidacy based on how well he did with a horribly run NHL expansion team and/or an OHL expansion team ???? Of course these coaching stints matter but it's just that most people would put more stock in looking at how he did with an established roster.

Again - do some freaking research. Bobby Orr played a full season ( 80 games ) in 1974-75 which was Cherry's first season in Boston. Orr only played 10 games 1n 1975 before moving onto Chicago for the 1976-77 season. As for Esposito - he also played a full season in 1974-55 but only played 12 games in 1975 for the Bruins before being traded to the Rangers. And as for Park - he only played 43 games for the Bruins in 1975-76. He did play most of the next 2 seasons but then fell to 40 games in 1978-79. So basically Cherry had Orr for 1 full season, Esposito for 1 full season and Park for 3 full seasons out his 5 seasons coaching the Bruins. What's your next theory ????

Lol, so I was wrong about how long he had Orr and Espo, but he had them at their peaks and lost in the first round lol

Then had other talented players and still lost in 76

74-75 he had Orr and Esposito at their peaks and lost in the first round
75-76 - Ratelle and Park and he loses in an early round
76-77 - Ratelle and Park and loses to the Habs
77-78 - Ratelle and Park and loses to the Habs
78-79 - Old and bad team

Foster Hewitt is in the HOF but you're telling me Don Cherry, who millions of Canadians tuned into HNIC every Saturday night to listen to for almost 40 years and even voted as one of the greatest Canadians of all time, shouldn't be?

Indeed it is. Criteria (builder):

"Coaching, managerial or executive ability, or ability in another significant off-ice role, sportsmanship, character and contributions to his or her organization or organizations and to the game of hockey in general."

You can argue about his ability in another significant off-ice role, but the sportsmanship and character requirements are definitely not in his favor and as such also the contributions are a mixed bag at best.

Yes he should. Don't really feel too strongly about his rhetoric either way but the man was a staple in hockey broadcasting for nearly 40 years.

The thing that set him apart from other pundits and personalities on his Coaches Corner segments was that he invited the viewer to agree or disagree with him. You wonder how many debates in living rooms or in the bars across the country Cherry started with his polarizing opinions. To me that transcends the role of simple broadcaster and should get him in the HHoF as a builder.

The entire Builders category for the Hall is very subjective, and I feel your comment about Cherry’s character is too harsh, but you’re entitled to your opinion too.
