Should Cronin be Fired?

Well sure. But after one of the trades, he praised him - or the coaching in general - somewhat I feel like. He could’ve said nothing but he chose not to do that.

We’ve been a pretty disappointing team this year I’d say( the offense and Pp especially). I think Pat could’ve cut ties a month or two ago or even in the offseason and it would’ve been justified - at least from an outsider’s POV - , but he hasn’t. I just think he’s more satisfied than we are and potentially by a lot.
Maybe, although I genuinely don’t know how he could be. He invested more in analytics than Murray ever did and there can’t be a single positive analysis about this team right now. And then of course they look pretty terrible by the eye test as well.

I don’t fault him for not firing Cronin after last season, as it makes sense to give him more than one season to prove himself.

I really believe that Pat just doesn’t want to have an interim coach for a couple months, and that he will only fire Cronin when he has the replacement lined up and ready to slot in. Maybe he’s interviewing or maybe he’s waiting for somebody to become available, but I’d be shocked if something didn’t happen.

Yeah I guess we’ll see. Just pointing out that he might be satisfied. There actually are a handful of things he could point to in favour of Cronin. (I agree that Cronin isn’t good, just pointing out that Verbeek may and probably does see it differently.)

What do you think those things would be? The only genuine improvement I can think of is LaCombe and he’s entirely possible he would have had the same development (or better) under a different coach.

Well, we are actually not horrible defensively and I think that’s something he was really emphasizing after parting ways with Eakins. A lot of that is goalies but not all of it, they do look better in the D zone than before. Maybe he just likes the structure we’re now playing with in the D zone even if it hasn’t resulted in a ton of success yet? We generally come across as being more competitive this year. And the record (also inflated by goalies) is probably playing into why he’s kept him so far. There’ve been some injuries too

Also, there have been other young players who’ve done well like Dostal and Gauthier. And then there could be other stuff that only he’d know about that I mentioned earlier, like guys didn’t have great offseasons and it’s impacted their play.

I’m trying to think of why he hasn’t parted ways. These items wouldn’t be enough for me, but Pats the boss and he sees things through his own lenses and biases (he hired the guy) and rationalizes sticking with him based on whatever improvements he’s seen.

We are dead last in the league in expected goals against - behind San Jose and Chicago. The defense has not improved at ALL, our goalies have just been unreal.

And to that point I don’t think a head coach deserves much if any credit for the performance of a goalie.

I stand by what I said either earlier in this thread or in the management thread: even if I don’t have the complete picture with all the variables, as an outsider, if Pat is content with what he’s seen and/or the rebuild is going well, then he should go also.
His teams have been failing at every level. Look at the Caps when they played the Ducks. They had an injury so they brought up a top tier minor player from a top tier AHL team and he ended up being a big reason why they won vs Anaheim. Ducks are bringing up guys who are coming from one of the worst AHL teams in the league to one of the worst NHL teams.

Who knows what stats he’s looking at. Obviously thats terrible but he’s stuck with him. Maybe his judgment just isn’t that good? He hired Cro instead of Carbury

If you have the time, this introductory conference for Matt McIlvane seems to explain a healthy portion of Verbeek and co’s view on development, and even how much the recognize it as the most important aspect of our rebuild.
