Video streaming service Shomi announced Monday it will shut down at the end of November, two years after it launched.

"The business climate and online video marketplace have changed markedly in the last few years," David Asch, senior vice-president and general manager for Shomi, said in a statement.

"Combined with the fact that the business is more challenging to operate than we expected, we've decided to wind down our operations."

Asch said the company remains proud of the service it launched and the role it played in the evolving video landscape in Canada.

I've never used it but kind of a surprise given it's only been around since 2014 to see it gone so abruptly. I have CraveTV (as well as Netflix) and I find it satisfactory at best.

I'm surprised, hasn't this thing been bundled with cable packages left and right? Must be a crap service if they can't even get people to watch doing that

It cost extra to have Shomi here. Having Shaw Cable only got me the opportunity to have like a 3 month trial instead of a single month.

Good.

It's because of stuff like Shomi that we can't get our content as easily in Canada. One shouldn't have to subscribe to every services to get easy access to most decent shows.Just makes you want to use illegal means.

Shomi was junk, a rushed, poorly put together system with horrible selection, menu construction and took forever to load. I got it for free and NEVER used it past the first time when I realize how impossible it was to find things on it.

Idiots.

Sounds horrible. I have Bell Fibe or whatever and we have CraveTV. It works reasonably well in my experience (on my TV) but the random division of content is annoying. One day I suddenly can't find super popular on-demand TV titles on TMN or HBO and took a while to realize what happened.

I enjoyed it since I got it free with my phone plan with Rogers. I'm curious, because you could choose between Shomi and Spotify, will those who chose Shomi get to switch?

I will agree on slow load times, the menus and stuff were decent. It got me into The League so I guess I need to wrap that series up now

I'm the same. Usually, I would root for more competition, but, this is a case where if Netflix has less competition for Canadian rights to online content, they become a much better alternative to the traditional cable companies.

I have Netflix, and since they do such a great job of providing their own content, I'm probably sticking with them for a while. I've never even considered getting Shomi or Crave.

I work for Bell and along side the people who work with CraveTV so Shomi was our direct competitor - that being said, I know a lot of good people who work at Shomi that are losing their jobs so I can't say I'm thrilled tbh.

Don't worry, CraveTV will probably croak not too far in the future.

That may sound cruel but i literally have no sympathy for our great oligarchs that are Rogers and Bell.

You know you can hate the corporation but still feel for the people working for them... (almost) everyone needs to make an income.

Yeah I hate the corporations too despite working for one but I still feel for my friends and their friends when they lose their jobs.

I still remember Bell and Rogers employees protesting against the possibility of Verizon coming to Canada.

I could elaborate more on the topic but this is not the thread for it.

Yes because the people working there that he's referring to are running Rogers and bell

shomi and crave didn't even have 1 million subs combined in Canada. Netflix is pushing 6 mill. I'm glad Shaw/rogers failed. its funny because originally the big 4 were supposed to go all in to compete with Netflix. then greed took over. IMO if you merged crave and shomi it would have been half decent. still no sympathy.

It's cool that this comes at the time when I'm writing a paper for a class on Netflix vs. Canadian providers and their service in Canada.

The service itself was trash. I tried it once and it's as slow and buggy as every other guide, menu, etc. Rogers releases. It's amazing how they haven't fixed the speed issues and they're constantly buggy.

I have a soft spot for Crave (Letterkenny, Billions, Seinfeld, Frasier). Don't want to see that one go. The only thing that turns me off of Crave is the absence of movies.

I saw on Reddit apparently those with Rogers (like myself) who got Shomi as part of a Share Everything plan can either switch to Spotify for the duration of the plan or get 6 months free to Netflix
