Shea Theodore injury last night

This is why I'm surprised they wanna host the World Cup mid season. Guys get hurt now and you're potentially missing them for both the stretch run and playoffs.

If this tournament happens in September, you're likely only missing the guy for a month or more of regular season play. If it's a serious injury, good chance hes back by mid season or the playoffs.

Hooray for the tournament, lets see who is next to get injured so the NHL can make a few extra bucks with this stunt.

Are you not a fan of the increased cap space that your team is getting over the next handful of years?

Cap Space is directly connected to NHL revenue so lets not bite the hand that feeds us.

Its the NHLPA/NHL players that are against tournaments happening in September. As it would extend their season even longer.

Hey why not just make the season 10 games long. Who needs those extra 72 anyway? It's just a moneygrab and guys are going to get injured. And you know what, one period ought to be fine. The NHL is just trying to fill the rest of the game with commercials, it's too risky to play more than 20 minutes.

Those games still go toward the standing and making the playoffs..so your argument doesn't make sense.

Source? Never seemed to be an issue before (2016, 2004, 1996, 1991 etc)

75% of the league will play as many, if not more, meaningless regular season games down the stretch that will have no bearing on the playoff picture, than will be played in this tournament. And this is a hell of a lot more exciting than those games.

Anyway, Theodore was free to make up his own mind.

Put the most important thing you do (NHL playoffs) at risk for the least important thing you do (non-NHL games). Weird to me that the NHL participates at all.

Personally, I think it makes good business sense from a long-term point of view.

Kids are inspired by national victories (as they were in the US in 1980 and in 1996) as they are less frequent than club championships and every kid in the country gets to share in the moment, as opposed to just the city in which the Cup is won.

Jack Johnson said:
"I got to stay up late that night to watch it," Johnson, a Blue Jackets defenseman, said of the game 20 years ago. "It had a huge influence on my career. I'd go on the driveway and pretend to be Chris Chelios or Brian Leetch, and I asked for their jerseys at Christmas."

Mike Richter said:
"We would pretend to be (Philadelphia Flyers) Bernie Parent and Bobby Clarke in my driveway, and then the (1980) Olympics came along we'd pretend to be Mike Eruzione and Jim Craig," said Richter, a Philadelphia native. "Suddenly, that dream was born. We were very lucky to have that very rare event influence us."

The sport relies on a continuous influx of talent and interest in the sport and international competition can help with that.

Yup, makes no sense, for the players.

NHL just cares about the money, and suckers showed up yesterday to watch the meaningless games.
