I feel like I've read about this stuff 100 times this year and can't keep it all straight.
Next year the only prospect who is NHL or CHL is Dickinson right? Everyone else can be AHL? (ignoring the 2024 draft guys but I am curious on Chernyshov because I feel like he's old enough to potentially play in the AHL)
The rule is that players
drafted out of the CHL must play in the NHL or CHL until they have played four full seasons in the CHL, or until the season in which they will be 20 as of the end of December. Once their CHL season is over (their team has been eliminated from further competition), they can join their team's AHL affiliate. There was also an exception for players signed to their ELC and drafted out of the OHL during the covid season (Coe was able to play in the AHL at 19 as a result), but that is no longer relevant.
In recent years, Sharks players subject to this rule included Dickinson, Musty, Wetsch, Roberts, Misskey, Weisblatt, Coe, Merkley, Chekhovich, or Chmelevski.
Next season, this will impact
Dickinson,
Wetsch, and
Roberts. Misskey is 20 and now AHL-eligible.
...
Players
drafted out of anywhere except the CHL (that is where they last played) are able to play in the AHL at age 18, even if a CHL team owns their rights:
Chernyshov, for example, was considered drafted out of Russia, even though Saginaw picked him in the CHL Import Draft. Halttunen was considered drafted out of Finland. Smith and Celebrini were both AHL-eligible this season, as they were drafted out of the USHL and NCAA respectively (even though Celebrini is Canadian).
