Looking at this from another angle, isn't it still very likely that Schaefer is available at 3rd?

It seems Hagens/Misa/Schaefer are fairly interchangeable, all top-tier prospects but not quite Celebrini-level. So, it will likely come down to need...

Possibly. I think we'll learn a lot about how the pros are thinking about it once EP comes out with their draft guide with a bunch of scout and exec quotes, and Bob McK comes out with his list and similar.

Arguments that Hagens looked really solid and people need that 1C, or that he's not nearly as dynamic as advertised and had kind of a disappointing year plus isn't very big and might not stick at C. Arguments that Misa had an amazing year vs had a terrible playoffs. Arguments Schaefer is the clear best (seems like the latest consensus) but barely played.

No. Hagens is considered far below them, and possibly not even 3rd overall. And the more "insider" your source gets, it seems, the more certain they are that Schaefer is #1.

But even then it's not like he's blowing the field away. If you're Chicago, do you really go for another defenseman? Any extra value you get drafting the "true" BPA will be given up many fold during roster rebalancing...

I did a fun experiment with Chat GPT and asked chat GPT if the Sharks gets number 1 pick, who would they pick? Here is the answer...............

🦈 Projected 1st Overall Pick by the Sharks:

🎯 Michael Misa (C/LW, Saginaw – OHL)

🔍 Why Michael Misa?

🔹 Elite Offense:

65 GP – 62 G – 72 A – 134 Points
NHLe: 54.6 (highest among top prospects)

  • Explosive scorer with game-breaking ability, a true 1C or top-line winger with superstar potential
  • 65 GP – 62 G – 72 A – 134 Points
  • NHLe: 54.6 (highest among top prospects)
  • Explosive scorer with game-breaking ability, a true 1C or top-line winger with superstar potential

🔹 Position Fit:

  • Sharks already have Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini in the pipeline at center — but you never pass on an elite forward like Misa.
  • Could play LW or rotate through C — imagine a Misa–Celebrini–Eklund top line 🔥

🔹 Organizational Strategy:

  • The Sharks are in full rebuild mode and want star power and ticket-selling talent.
  • Misa has the “face of the franchise” aura. He's a potential 70–90 point player in his prime.
  • 65 GP – 62 G – 72 A – 134 Points
  • NHLe: 54.6 (highest among top prospects)
  • Explosive scorer with game-breaking ability, a true 1C or top-line winger with superstar potential

👥 Alternate (Less Likely) Picks:

🛡️ Matthew Schaefer (LD, Erie – OHL)

  • If the Sharks decide they want a cornerstone defenseman to anchor their blue line for the next decade, Schaefer is their guy.
  • Pairing Schaefer with Thrun, Dickinson, or Muk long-term could be a strong blue line foundation.

🧠 James Hagens (C, NCAA – Boston College)

  • If they prefer a safer two-way, vision-heavy playmaker at center — but with Smith & Celebrini already in place, he’s less likely unless Misa’s development stalls.

And people out there actually trust AI!

If only my college freshmen were Sharks fans, this would be a fantastic example for them on why to trust themselves for research over AI for their papers.
I never said I trust AI, but it was still fun to see the answer. BTW: the AI did apologized afterward for making the mistake. "It seems I made an error in my previous response, and I apologize for that! Guhle is Kaiden Guhle, a top defensemanwho currently plays for the Montreal Canadiens. He should not have been included in the San Jose Sharks lineup."
