On the drafting for wingers with size, I’m fine with it. We have three 5’11-6’0 forwards that make up the core of the forwards. Tofolli is 6’, and while he takes a ton of abuse and is hard on opposing dmen, isn’t really adding size or physicality. Graf (6’1 but light) and Zetterlund (5’11 built like a fridge) aren’t huge. The next guy most likely to be around for three years is Kovalenko, he’s 5’10. Our forwards are small, light, and skilled.
You can compliment them with size in free agency, but typical you are getting guys who are less physical (Wennberg), less skilled (Kunin next summer), or likely to fall off. Power forward contracts in free agency are often dangerous. Look at the 2016 UFA frenzy contracts of Lucic, Ladd, Okposo, Brouwer, and Backes. It’s a graveyard,
Everyone agrees you need three of an elite center, another elite forward, an elite dman, and elite goalie, but almost universally cup teams have at least one hard hitting, relentless, immovable power forward as well (Stone, Tkachuk/Barkov/Bennett, Brown, Toews/Byfuglien, Lucic/Marchand, Landeskog, Schenn/Barbashev).
If even one of the six big forwards Grier’s drafted/targted in the top 45 hit (Musty, Bystedt, Edstrom, Cherny, Lund, Halt; and I bet he takes two more between this year and next); he’s saved himself having to go find a power forward in the minefield that is free agency. In trade, they’re also very expensive (look at Timo).
Grier seems to look at the draft like this:
Top 15: Franchise Cornerstone at C/D
Late 1st/early 2nd: Top 6 forward with size, good skating dman
3-5th: NHL guys but bottom of the lineup (5-6 D, 4th line F, goalies)
6-7th: Boom Bust
Hitting on 1 out of 7 top 45 picks for a top 6 power forward is poor, but getting that guy at usually below market rate for their 25-29 years (and playoff motivated by an upcoming $7x7+ cap increase contract) could be the difference of winning a cup.
Also, imagine we end up with Hagens this year and Misa next, a great outcome. However, we’d be so small. Imagine if instead of the big forwards we’d gone with guys like Cristal and Nadeau (who I really liked at the Musty and Halt picks). They may end up being better, they way even hit while our guys bust, but they’d also be run over. Griers trying to build a balanced org.
