I’d of course love it if Dickinson ended up being better than Buium (though I wanted Buium) but it’s completely absurd to make that judgement right now.

Dickinson is a more elite level skater and has better physical tools. Better defensive tools and transition Game. His floor is top 4 dman ala Sanderson comparable

Buium has a higher offensive IQ, but is behind everywhere else. Less physical tools and defensive IQ

Their draft year London used Bonk on the PP in the bumper position, so Dickinson's numbers weren't as high as they could have been.

The thing I liked about Buium at draft time was that of all of the defensemen in the draft, he had the best vision and the best passing out of all of them IMO and that above everything else is what I think separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to offensive defensemen. People get excited about guys with the big booming shot, but those are low probability scoring events. That's the thing I hadn't seen from him either pre-draft or in his short stint with us before returning to juniors.

But you have to be pretty excited about his statline so far this year.

Depends on the shot and the skating.
I agree a quarterback is the main thing you see from great offensive dmen.

However

Triggermen on the point with good lateral skating can be game breakers, ala Brent Burns

Defense is harder than wing for sure but Dickinson is also a much much much better prospect than Musty. I think it would be criminal to send him back to the OHL after this season. Just blood him on the third pair.

I think it just depends on how his camp goes. I’d probably want him to spend time in the AHL and get up to speed with the play unless he comes in and blows the doors off in camp.

Pretty sure Dickinson has the same problem as Musty - it's either NHL or back to juniors for him next year

I think the difference is that Haltunnen is European. The rules are definitely weird.

I think we should and probably will force Dickinson into the NHL next year. Let him struggle and grow the same way Smith is.

Depends on where you're drafted. Haltunnen was drafted out of Finland and he was signed by us then we loaned him to the team that owns his CHL rights. Dickinson and Musty were drafted out of the OHL, and are thus bound by the CHL-NHL agreement to only play there or in the NHL until their 20yo season. Which then means a guy like Cagnoni, who turns 20 before Jan 1 can play in the AHL in his D+2 season unlike Musty.

On that note, there's also the SHL agreement which is an extra loop that lets Bystedt (a 1st rounder) come over to the AHL as a D+2 more easily than Havelid.

Halttunen was drafted out of Finland. Any Euros drafted prior to playing in any of the CHL aren't subject to that restriction.

An example of an Euro subjected to the rule was Timo Meier. He's Swiss but was drafted out of the QMJHL. Though he was eligible to play in the AHL after his D+1 because he was 20 by the start of the 2016-2017 season. So he is a bit of an oddity.

Musty takes an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty firing a puck at the Gens bench after they score. He comes out of the box and scores on a 2-on-1. Then when he gets to the bench still gets benched the rest of the 1st period despite scoring out of the box. Then breaks his hand in the 2nd period

I love the idea of the kid but at this point, once he's healthy and rebuilds his value a bit, I wouldn't be sad if he's moved in a package for a different future piece. At best he could be our Nichushkin but that's a deal with a devil.

To be clear I'm not talking about the broken hand, that's just bad luck... I'm talking about the unsportsmanlike, the general struggles playing a more well rounded game, etc.

Ugh... Tough luck for Musty. At least hand injuries heal up pretty well and don't stop a player from keeping in good condition generally. Hopefully he finally does get traded and is the same player in the stretch run and playoffs for a better team.

I think the best option is to let him play out his junior days, get established in the NHL as a scorer (I'm confident he will) and then use him as a trade chip in a reverse-Meier type of trade.

Honestly, the only good thing about this injury is that Sudbury loses out on getting any real trade value for him. Serves them right for not moving him when they had the chance.
